New Music: "Smokin' Hot Wife" - Sawyer Brown

As a HUGE fan of 90's country super group, Sawyer Brown, I was ... well, for lack of another word, bonkers ... to hear that they were releasing new music after so many years of being out of earshot. I remember watching them on Star Search with Ed McMahon and seeing them open for Dwight Yoakum at the Rib Fest. What a show these guys put on! With songs like the one that kicked off the country line dance craze, "The Race is On", Mark Miller's energetic vocals on songs like "Some Girls Do", "Thank God for You", and "Step That Step" and then those great smooth and mellow laid back songs like "All These Years", "Cafe Down on the Corner" and my favorite, "This Night Won't Last Forever", and of course about 15 years to think on new material, I just knew this was gonna be awesome, and then I heard it, "Smokin' Hot Wife" and I have to admit, I was not blown away. It's "eh" I guess, but not quite the calibre of music I've come to expect from Sawyer Brown considering their past hits and multiple awards. It's different than their trademark style, more Buffet/Zac Brown-sh than Sawyer Brown. It's quite honestly, a little more boring than one would think a Sawyer Brown song would be. The Sawyer Brown I love had Mark jumping wildly from one end of the stage to the other. This song has me picturing him just sitting in a beach chair sipping on mixed drinks watching his "smokin' hot wife" jumping waves in the surf with the kids. While I love Sawyer Brown, I'm just not diggin' on this one personally. I'm sure this is probably just that one obligatory song that every cd has, the one that just doesn't do it for me like the other songs probably will. Heck, it's Sawyer Brown, they're entitled to ONE song that won't win song of the year. It's not like they weren't voted "Band of the Year" for the entire decade of the 90's to make up for it :-) I'm sure the cd will be as great as the band itself and can't wait to hear the rest of it, but I'll pass on "Smokin' Hot Wife" for now.
