CD REVIEW: "AN EVENING WITH ... DOLLY" - DOLLY PARTON

CD: "An Evening With ... Dolly"
Artist: Dolly Parton
Label: Dolly Records / Cracker Barrel
Release Date: April 2012

If you've got a hankerin' for some good ol' country, then head over to your local Cracker Barrel restaurant for a heaping plate of Dolly along with your  order of chicken and dumplings. Cracker Barrel has partnered with Dolly Parton on the exclusive release of her brand new live "double" set .. meaning cd and dvd that is. Ha, I know what you were thinking! This set is a big one too!

No one does big and live better than Dolly Parton and I think most old school country fans will agree on that fact. Her shows are always "just Dolly", none of the extra stuff that seems to come with live shows these days like pyrotechnics, a 50 piece ridiculous backing band that overpowers the artist, or half naked "country girls" shaking it for the crowd. You get just Dolly and the bare essentials of a band and this makes for great music , plus, as Dolly does, she always throws in the unexpected and in this case, it's her personal interviews and rare behind the scenes look at what makes Dolly and her music such an enjoyable and larger than life listening and viewing experience.

The cd is bursting at the seams with Dolly classics, much loved and respected works of music and reminders of the days when country wasn't "cool" but we thought it was the coolest. Dolly brings her best memories through your speakers with "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors", "Little Sparrow", "Here You Come Again", "Islands in the Stream", "I Will Always Love You" and my personal favorite from my growing up country years, "9 to 5". I'll never forget Doralee Rhodes fending off advances from her boss, Franklin M. Hart, Jr (played by Dabney Coleman). It made listeners everywhere want to "pour themselves a cup of ambition". Aaahhh, the good old days. Now that we've reminisced awhile, let's not forget that Dolly has some great newer stuff that's also featured on the cd such as "Backwoods Barbie", "Better Get to Livin", "Jesus and Gravity" and others. A total of 15 live performance tracks as filmed at London's prestigious O2 Arena in 2008 in front of 35,000 doting and devoted fans are included on this cd.

If you're a fan of Dolly, this is a must have for your collection. If you're not a Dolly fan ... well ... are there REALLY any of those out there that call themselves country music fans? She's the very picture of country music, the relateable vision, the small town girl with big dreams that through hard work, dedication, paying your dues, shooting down the naysayers and determination finally came true. Isn't that what Nashville and country music are about?

You can only purchase this cd through Cracker Barrel either by walking into a Cracker Barrel restaurant near you or by visiting their online store at www.crackerbarrel.com.
