Seems like every year at the time the CMA awards are announced, fans are upset, feeling that their favorite artist was "snubbed" or overlooked when in reality, it's usually not the case at all. The CMA Awards are one of the only awards shows that remain where the industry actually does the voting based on sales and overall growth as an artist. Thought this might clear up some questions many of you might have and clarify the voting process. Just because your artist didn't secure a final nomination or win the award isn't necessarily a negative thing or a slap in the face, it simply means they didn't meet the criteria set in place by the CMA and someone else did. Remember, especially if they're a new artist, it takes a little more than just popularity and a good live show. If their sales and growth meet the criteria for the next year, there's always a good chance you'll see them in there. This information comes directly from http://www.cmaworld.com/cma-awards/about.

Winners are selected through three voting rounds. The votes come from industry professionals who are members of the Country Music Association. This means that winners are selected by their own industry colleagues and not through fan votes as are many other awards shows. This makes the CMA a highly coveted award.

Awards criteria, rules of election and balloting procedures are established by CMA’s Board of Directors. Singles, albums, music videos and qualified music products for the musical event must have been first released during the eligibility period.

Three rounds of voting:

Ballot 1: Each CMA member may nominate one act in each category on the first ballot. The top 20 qualified vote recipients in each category become official nominees on the second ballot. In the Entertainer of the Year category the top 15 qualified nominees will advance to the second ballot.

Ballot 2: On the second ballot, CMA members must vote for up to five nominees in each category. The results are tabulated. The top five vote-getters in each category are the final nominees and appear on the third/final ballot.

Ballot 3: On the final ballot, members vote for one nominee in each category to determine the winners.

The entire balloting process is conducted and certified by the international accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLP
