Maya Angelou once said that music was her refuge, a space to crawl between the notes when she needed a place to get away from the darkness of the world and I don't think anyone can argue that in 2020, a year when negativity has been at the highest levels many of us have never seen until now, music has been one thing that we have been able to depend on. It's never let us down, it's been there 24 hours a day and will continue to be there to see us through to a brighter place.
This year, I'm not doing my standard "Top 50 Songs" list like I normally do because it hasn't been a standard year. These 50 songs, in no particular order, style or date of release (some are older, some are new), have been my place to shut out the noise and tune into something good. They helped me cry when I needed to or just dance when I needed to. These were my places to "hide".
Thank you to the artists, songwriters, musicians, and everyone involved in creating my escape. You are so much appreciated and just know that even though it's been hard on you, your talent has made it easier for so many others so this year was a success in that regard. You are important, you are needed and you are "essential".
