SO HERE'S WHY I SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTISTS ... AND WHY YOU SHOULD TOO

There is an endless sea of music out there to choose from and my primary choice of music is the independent artist. Don’t misunderstand, I love signed artists and listen to Top 40 too, but there is something special about an independent artist who hasn’t allowed themselves to get lost in the soul sucking vortex of today’s music industry.

I’m not talking the weekend garage band warrior or the guy who occasionally gets up on open mic night to impress the new girl of the week. I’m talking about the serious and determined artist who is out to make their music more than a hobby and don’t mind doing what it takes within reason to get it out there. They don’t have the backing of big bucks, they’re not the ones who pucker up to kiss the ass of an arrogant corporate suit who’s telling them what to sing, what to wear, how to look, to drop some weight, or that it would be best if you didn’t talk too much about the family because it’s not good for the image. They don’t have high paying radio promoters, they do it themselves and realize that their fans are their biggest and most honest promoters and they don’t have to feel the need to compete with the bigger name on their label.

I love the artists who stand by their creativity and aren’t willing to sell it to the highest bidder who’s going to take control of it and turn them into something that doesn’t even start to resemble who they are. They refuse to stand in line on the musical conveyor belt as another corporately packaged, look alike, sound alike, cookie cutter molded artist who won’t be around in 5-10 years. I love the guys who will play the hole in the wall venues barely taking home tips just to be heard. They realize the size of the venue doesn’t matter and neither does the size of the crowd because all it takes is one person to hear what they have to offer and change their lives. They don’t do it for the fame, the money or the attention, they do it because they love it and because it’s who they are. It isn’t always the voices that turn my head, it’s the drive and the willpower to get in the van and hit the road, not knowing what’s ahead, only knowing they have to move forward. They stand on that stage night after night and sing to a crowd of drunks who aren’t even listening to the music. It’s frustrating, but they do it with a smile on their face. They load up their merch tables with stacks of signed self-released CD’s they paid for themselves, cleverly designed t-shirts that they paid for themselves and signed headshots that they paid to have taken, and then stand at that table exhausted after their show shaking every hand, thanking every person for coming and posing for a million pictures. They don’t just bolt off the stage and become a bus hermit. Why? It’s part of the deal and most of them really don’t mind doing it. They seem to connect on a more personal level with their fans than high profile names. They tend to remember your face and your name and talk to you for more than the standard 5 minute shake and go.

The struggle to be heard is one of the most difficult roads to travel but these artists just pile their stuff in the van and head to the next gig, the next city, the next month, the next year and hope that someone will listen and tell someone about them and that the right ears will eventually hear. They don’t give up easily and if they do, then this wasn’t the right road for them anyway. To them it’s not a hobby, it’s their livelihood and puts food on their tables and pays the bills. They aren’t any less talented than someone in the Top 40 and being played on country radio, some are more talented, sound better and their music is better quality. They just haven’t had that break yet to give them the platform to make that life changing impression but they don’t give up. This is why I don’t give up on them.

Give an unheard name a chance, listen to new music, don’t compare it to what the industry tells you is good music. Every big name started in a small venue, every big name was once a local unknown. There’s room on your playlist for both.

RAY SCOTT DELIVERS NEW SINGLE, "HEY FOOL", ON JUNE 30

The “Country Renegade” (PEOPLE Magazine)
reminisces on love and fidelity in self-reflective new track:
“This is a ‘Don’t F it Up’ song”

Ray Scott follows his May 31 single “Ripples” with “Hey Fool,” a new track out June 30 at digital streaming platforms.

Known for his “painstakingly crafted” lyrics and stories ”that match his top-shelf vocals” (Billboard), Scott penned “Hey Fool” as a cautionary tale about love, loyalty, and loss, told from the perspective of someone who’s lived the consequences.

“We all make mistakes… we all ‘F it up’ sometimes,” says Scott. “This is a ‘Don't F it up’ song, told by an authority on the subject. I think most can relate… from either side.”

Pre-save/add “Hey Fool” here: https://onerpm.link/Hey_Fool

“Hey Fool” and “Ripples” follow Scott’s 10th studio album, Wrong Songs: Musings From The Shallow End (3.31), a satirical collection of irreverent, high-energy honky-tonk tunes.

While hilariously “shallow,” the album sits atop a deep foundation of hard-earned country music cred. An independent artist with a “fathoms-deep singing voice and wicked songwriting wit” (Rolling Stone), Scott co-wrote Clay Walker's 2003 hit "A Few Questions" and Randy Travis' "Pray for the Fish” before releasing his 2005 debut album, My Kind of Music.

His 2021 album Cover The Earth — hailed as “the kind of country that reaches inside your heart and gives it a two fisted squeeze” by American Songwriter — plumbed the depths of personal pain and family history.

#ARTISTTIPS - HOW TO PROMOTE YOUR MUSIC EFFECTIVELY AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST

As an independent artist, the world of self-promoting is opening up with a much wider door every year with the addition of new technology and ways to get your music heard. Here are some tips to help you get started:

1.) PLAY LIVE SHOWS OFTEN. LEAVE THEM WANTING MORE

Can you imagine if your favorite artists never played live or just played a few shows a year? As an independent artist, you NEED to stay in the forefront. You can't just rely on recorded music to get by. Fans want to see you and so do fans who don't know they're fans yet. BE SEEN. GET OUT THERE.

While on the topic of being seen, don't just play at the same 2 venues over and over again. Reach out to new venues, look at venues outside of your local area. Yes, it can be costly, but if you do it right, you won't break the bank. Remember, you're not the Rolling Stones so high dollar hotels and tour buses aren't required starting out. Being cost efficient and doing things on a smaller scale will allow you to reach more fans in more locations.

- APPLY FOR FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Here are some of the big country music festivals in the US. There are also a ton of smaller festivals in towns across the country that you should look into that also draw good sized crowds.

Chillin' On the Lucie

- HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU BE CHARGING?

I saw this from Dave Ruch, a performing and teaching artist and thought I'd share:

"SCENARIO A: WHEN THE VENUE TELLS YOU WHAT THEY PAY

Step 1 – you think back on what you’ve been paid for gigs in the past
Step 2 – look around at what other acts are being paid for similar gigs
Step 3 – consider what you are being offered
Step 4 – say “OK”

SCENARIO B: WHEN THE VENUE ASKS YOU WHAT YOU CHARGE

Step 1 – think back on what you’ve been paid for gigs in the past
Step 2 – look around at what other acts are being paid for similar gigs
Step 3 – dream about getting what you actually deserve
Step 4 – quote a price that’s not much better than Scenario A, or perhaps even worse!

What if, instead of taking what you can get, you start with a number, on paper, representing what you need to be making per week or per month, and figure out your rates from there? Would this change the way you do things? Would it force you into some different areas of work that pay better?"

- REACH OUT TO YOUR LOCAL NEWS OUTLET AND SEE IF THEY'LL DO A FEATURE ON YOUR MUSIC AND LET YOU COME ON FOR A SONG OR TWO.

2.) CONNECTING THE "OLD FASHIONED WAY"

- HAVE A MAILING LIST

I hate them, but I ALWAYS read them and I know what's going on with my favorite artists. I bet I get 50 a week, but that's how I know where they are going to be, when their new album is coming out and sometimes, they let fans in on things that haven't been announced to the general public yet. It's another necessary form of engagement and direct communication with your fan base. If a fan takes the time to sign up for your list, that means they're genuinely interested in what's happening in your life as an artist. Email is also the only real way besides your website to reach out to fans who have turned their noses up at social media and don't have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or whatever book-a-gram-chat. This is how they get their information. Keep that information going out. FYI, email has 4-5 times the users as social media ... do the math. Everyone needs an email these days, we don't NEED a social media account. Social Media sites come and go, looks like email is here for good.

Oh yeah, try to avoid as many junk filter trigger words in your emails as possible to avoid having your emails go smack into the spam folder. Below are some of the most common. If you have to use them, use them sparingly. TIP: Use a thesaurus to find a similar word to keep you out of the email doghouse.

As Seen On, Buy, Buy Direct, Clearance, Order, $$$, Affordable, Bargain, Cheap, Discount, Free, Incredible Deal, Lowest Price, Save Up To, Accept Credit Cards, Cards Accepted, Check or Money Order, Accordingly, Chance, Here, Never, Miracle, Sample, Success, Stop, Dear, Friend, Hello, Click, Click Here, Click Below, Open, Opt In, Performance, Sale, Visit Our Website, 100% Free, 50% off, Deal, Giving Away, Offer, Prize, Prizes, Terms and Conditions, Trial, Win, Winner, Winners, Winning, Won, You are a Winner, You Have Been Selected, You're a Winner, Free Gift, Free Membership, All New, Amazing, Congratulations, Drastically Reduced, Fantastic Deal, Great Offer, Limited Time, Now Only, Offer Expires, Order Now, Supplies are Limited, Urgent, Bonus

3.) DON'T BE A NUDNICK ON SOCIAL MEDIA (*YAWN *)

When it comes to social media, creativity and authenticity wins, EVERY TIME. Be YOU. Be open, be transparent (Good googily moogily, that almost sounds political doesn't it - or like a piece of scotch tape). Talk about what you find interesting, what captivates you. Post teasers of what's coming next, keep 'em coming back to find out more. If you have a new project on the way, post a taste of what to expect, a sample clip, a behind the scenes video. Don't be afraid to be creative. No one wants to see boring, auto bot, repetitive overindulgent self promotion about the same thing over and over. Change it up, keep 'em coming back, not yawning.

Connect with a larger brand and possibly double your traffic on social media. Establish a rapport with other artists, bloggers or venues. Start conversations with them that are sure to draw interest from fans on all sides. You will see your numbers start to grow.

Post frequent live video - performances, commentary from the road, chats with random fans before or after a show, interviews, contests, and other great content. Everyone loves a chance to watch what goes on behind the scenes live.

Polls and Surveys - Ask your fans for their opinion. They LOVE to have input and know that their voice makes a difference. Ask what your next single should be, where you should play next, what things they like or don't like about your website.

Blog Posts - People read these, they really do. Write about an experience that meant something to you, advice you were given that you'd like to share, a fan moment that made you smile, how you feel about shooting your first video. Write from the heart and you'll reach the heart of those who love your music.

Be Consistent. Don't post regularly then stop. Don't post personally then let a social media manager take over, fans notice these things.

Hint: Shorten your links. No one wants to see a link that takes up half a page. Use Bitly or something similar and clean up your posts.

4.)  SUBMIT YOUR MUSIC FOR STREAMING PLAY LISTS

Find out who runs the play list, connect with them. They're pretty easily found on Spotify or you can use social media or the Internet to research this information. Some are run by Spotify itself. In that case, reach out to the digital streaming outlet's Artist Liaison. Don't write them a book, keep it simple with easy access to samples of your music and DON'T BEG. FYI, the more music you release and the most streams you have, the better your chances of getting "playlisted." However you choose to release, just make sure it's of a good quality and doesn't sound like a second rate, back yard shed, garage sale 80's Dollar Store equipment.

Send your listeners to the digital streaming outlets to listen. The more streams you have, the more you're likely to be noticed.

5.) SURROUND YOURSELF WITH TEAM PLAYERS

Your team is one of the most important parts of your future. Those on your team need to be 100% in or 100% out and be working in YOUR best interest. Make sure your team is experienced in connecting with potential investors, radio programmers, management representatives, tour managers, venue owners, etc. Make sure they know how to do this on a professional level and not an "I'm a super fan and this band is the best thing ever" level. If you want to be taken seriously, make sure your team is batting for you with the serious intention of knocking it out of the park. Promotions need to be done with care and quality by someone who knows your music, knows your background and knows who your core audience is. Your management needs to be someone who has a background in management and knows how to handle situations you might not be comfortable dealing with such as contracts, bookings, monetary transactions, travel details, press arrangements, etc. Make sure you are surrounded with the best of the best that you can afford and don't be afraid to spend a little money to get that quality. They should be working not only FOR you but WITH you.

And Finally ... DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED.

It's not easy. It's not going to happen overnight. It might not even happen in 5 years. Remember, the biggest names didn't always play arenas and stadiums. They didn't always sit at #1 on the charts. They started out just like you, sometimes playing to a handful of people who have no clue who they even are, in stale smoke filled bars. They probably thought about giving up more than once until someone gave them the nudge they needed. Wait for the nudge, it's coming. If things don't work out, you ALWAYS have the music which is what got you started and it will always connect with someone and could very possibly make a positive change in their lives. It's not about what the music brings to you, it's about what you bring to the music and what your music brings to listeners. Don't get so caught up in the business that you lose sight of the art. It takes 10 years to be an overnight success according to Travis Tritt.

INDEPENDENT ARTIST HANNAH BETHEL RELEASES "RHINESTONE RODEO" TO RADIO AS SHE WRAPS FIRST LEG OF NATIONAL TOUR

Demand for Airplay Increases as Bethel Energizes Fanbase with Powerful Concert Performances and Emotionally Charged Music Video

"Hannah Bethel is equal parts vulnerability and strength, which makes her a force to be reckoned with in country music. The seemingly simplistic melody of her new song, 'Rhinestone Rodeo,' only enhances the more complicated and emotional ties that come when pursuing a risky chase, as the storyline suggests. With three female powerhouse writers (Bethel being one) behind the ballad, the slowly disappearing art of eloquently painting a detailed picture reemerges as a must in today's listening world. Not to mention the attraction of Bethel's effortless and easy listening vocals. Look this girl up---she is a game changer!" - Lindsey Sipe, The Country Note

Independent Country/Americana recording star Hannah Bethel releases "Rhinestone Rodeo" to radio today. Increased demand from programmers for the single comes hot on the heels of wrapping the first 16-show leg of her national tour - and as the emotional and heart-tugging music video for "Rhinestone Rodeo' gathers steam at CMT Music and The Country Network.

"Rhinestone Radio" is available to Country and Americana broadcasters at CDX Nashville and fans can listen to the single here.

Critical acclaim and fan reaction for "Rhinestone Rodeo" has been very strong since the music video was recently premiered by both Billboard and CMT Music. Billboard stated "Bethel's ethereal vocals and universal storytelling are at the heart of her new song 'Rhinestone Rodeo,' a tale about chasing her dreams and never giving up." CMT extolled that "Bethel exudes some solid country wisdom made famous by Dolly Parton in her latest release 'Rhinestone Rodeo.' Both believe life is sweeter when you have an attitude of gratitude, and each has a knack for turning adversity into works of art." The Boot named "Rhinestone Rodeo" one of 10 New Songs You Need To Hear and it is included on several playlists, including Spotify's CMT Music and CMT Next Women of Country and on Apple Music CMT Next Women of Country.

"I am so excited and grateful for the way that 'Rhinestone Rodeo' has been received so far," says Bethel. "I am thrilled to be sharing it with my friends at radio!"

Bethel's "Rhinestone Rodeo Tour" has won her rave reviews to date as she has crisscrossed America performing in The Great Smoky Mountains, New York City, Connecticut, Colorado, Kentucky, and multiple concerts in Alaska and in her hometown of Nashville. From solo acoustic performances at glamping destination Under Canvas and New York City's famed Rockwood Music Hall, to full band shows at influential Indie Rock, Americana and Country clubs including The Basement, 3rd & Lindsley and The Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, to Tidball's in Bowling Green (once described by David Fricke in Rolling Stone magazine as the city's "long-running equivalent to CBGB," the New York City music club where groups like the Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads got their start), and festival shows on the coast of Valdez, Bethel is winning the hearts of fans across multiple genres and varied musical tastes. She also garnered glowing quotes from several talent buyers on the tour that speak volumes about her live performances:

"You can hear her love and desire to perform in each note sang by her soothing but powerful voice. On her first show with us, Hannah joined a lineup that boasted of some the most respected female artists of the Nashville and South Central Kentucky region. She held her own and along with her three-piece band behind her, demanded the crowd's attention instantly. We hope to make the legendary Tidball's a home for Hannah and a gateway to the North for her future tours."
- Brian Jarvis, owner, Tidballs, Bowling Green, KY

"We were pleased to launch our Acoustic Campfire Music Series with Hannah Bethel as our first artist at our Great Smoky Mountains location this summer. Hannah's warm and friendly personality and intimate yet powerful performances strongly connected with our guests."
- May Lilley, VP Marketing for Under Canvas

"Hannah's confidence, exuberance and sheer musicality on stage are indicative of an artist who has put in the time required for her craft. She provides a shining example to those thinking about delving into a career in music. Hannah Bethel is badass."
- Mike Grimes, co-owner, The Basement, The Basement East, Nashville, TN

"Everyone loved Hannah and her band! Her shows were fantastic."
- Laurine Regan, Events & Marketing Coordinator, City of Valdez, Alaska

Between tour dates Bethel also made multiple appearances on WSM 650 AM Radio, and has been featured by The Country Note, Nashville Access, Think Country, NY Country Swag and others.

Bethel will resume her "Rhinestone Rodeo Tour" in August. Stay current with her latest touring updates at https://www.hannahbethel.com

IT'S "ALL OR NOTHING" FOR CASEY JAMES - KICKSTARTER PROJECT CLOSES JULY 1 - LET"S NOT CALL IT A NIGHT ON THIS PROJECT!

Following the critical acclaim and fan response to his first independent studio album "Strip It Down", Casey James returns to Kickstarter to raise funds for his follow-up independent album. The "All or Nothing" campaign ends on July 1.

“Having the fans involved absolutely makes the difference for me in terms of how I make records and what those records accomplish,” said James. “So, it just makes sense to me to come back to Kickstarter and do it again.
James continued, “I'd never experienced anything as amazing as having fans fuel an entire record, but that's EXACTLY what happened with Strip It Down, and it was huge in so many ways for me. It’s such a great feeling to be able to make the music that I want to make and to know that I’m finally connecting the dots between my heart, my music, and my fans. I’ve been getting so much great feedback from everyone in regards to the new material, and I can’t wait to get in the studio and record it.”

Fans aren’t the only ones anxious for new music. Three-time Grammy Award winner Tom Hambridge, who produced Strip It Down, has signed on to produce the next record as well.

After splitting from Sony Music Nashville, James went straight to the source – his fans – to fund his first Independent album. Teaming up with Hambridge was a great start, and at the conclusion of the crowd-funded creative collaboration, James was left with a record that garnered rave reviews from Blues/Rock/Americana media outlets and fans across the world with the Rock Doctor raving that that Strip It Down was “one hell of a delightful surprise!”

Fans who embraced "Strip It Down" will appreciate this next step in James’ evolution as a notable blues composer and performer. The approach for second recording will be very similar to the first. “If 'Strip It Down' was the liner notes to my musical biography, then the next record will read as the first chapter,” James explained.

Certainly, James had an exhilarating debut into the blues society with "Strip It Down", an appropriately titled album given the raw and rooted songs it contained – raucous and danceable album that was truly blues at its core.

His upcoming project rides the same lane, but allows musical breadth for his fans, who are watching James continue to reach as an artist. The new material is more diverse and yet somehow manages to come together and fit into a style that is pure Casey James.

James recently debuted some of his new music in a live, in-studio broadcast that is now up for all to see on YouTube. With title tracks “Come on Saturday Night” and “Here to Please” you don’t want to miss what James is coming out with next!

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON CASEY:

Anyone who has followed his journey from “American Idol” to Sony Music Nashville will be thrilled to discover the passion that drives the guitar-slinging Texan is dialed to 11. His 2012 self-titled debut won critical raves and yielded Top 15 single “Crying on a Suitcase” – and Top 20 single “Let’s Don’t Call It A Night.” His follow-up, gut-wrenching single “Fall Apart,” powerfully showcased his skills as a producer, intense vocalist, and lead guitarist.

James has had an impressive career spanning from a local musician to playing for an audience of 22 million people weekly during his run on “American Idol.” From touring his hometown to touring the world while playing his own material, he has been consistently growing and evolving as an artist. This latest effort introduced his music to a whole new demographic and was well received worldwide. "The last few years have seen so many of my dreams come true. I'm finally interacting with people that I respect and admire; artists, producers, writers, musicians, and the fans. These are all people that have the same heart for music that I have. It's been an absolute pleasure working alongside artists like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Delbert McClinton, Tom Hambridge, Lee Roy Parnell" and the list goes on. The point is that after a lifetime of dedication and work, James is finally busting in to the scene that he's always wanted to be a part of. "To drive down the road and hear my song being played on SiriusXM BB King's Bluesville is one of the best feelings I could ask for. Especially when I still feel proud and excited about how it sounds. I’m just thankful to be able to do what I love,” said James in a recent interview with his hometown Fox network television station in Dallas, TX. “I’m thankful to have a dedicated audience that believes in who I am and what I do. I couldn’t ask for more and I’m always excited for what’s next.”

NEW YORK COUNTRY ARTIST, KEN WILBER, ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF “YOU’VE GONE TO MY HEAD”

Independent New York Country music artist, Ken Wilber, recently released his latest single, “You've Gone to My Head,” penned by acclaimed hit songwriters, Sonny LeMaire (Exile, Restless Heart, Diamond Rio, Clay Walker), Rory Bourke (George Strait, K.T. Oslin, Collin Raye) and Charlie Black (Anne Murray). An emotion filled love song describing special feelings of falling for that special someone. Music is available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music and download on Google Play, Amazon Music and iTunes.

“I have enjoyed working with such an amazing group of talented people, from the studio musicians, to the songwriters and harmony vocalists, this has been wonderful process. I am eternally grateful to Sonny LeMaire and Tony Cottrill for all of their hard work and dedication to this project and for taking time out of their busy schedules to work with me. I continue to learn and grow each opportunity to work with all of these great individuals,” said Ken Wilber. “You've Gone to My Head" is one of my favorite songs from our first session. It is such a well written song that reminds the listener of that feeling when you first realize that you're in love. The harmonies Aly Cutter added to this track blow me away every time I hear it.”

“Working with Ken has been like a breath of fresh air! Helping him bring life to these songs has been a real joy,” said Sonny LeMaire. “To all those who will get the chance to hear his music, I think they will agree that Ken is the real deal!”

“Ken is a real pro, with an original vocal style that’s fresh and confident. Ken sings his music with passion, honesty and from the heart. His material is brilliant, intelligent, creative and fun, and makes you feel good. His mindful words will touch the soul of every listener,” said Tony Cottrill. “Ken is knocking on opportunity’s door and he is ready. Play it loud!”

...Maybe I shouldn't be drivin'
I've got a little buzz goin', I feel a little high
The kind of shape that I'm in, I find it hard to focus
It's like the stars in my eyes
Gotta roll down the window so I can breathe
You don't know the effect you have on me...

Aaron Watson is set to make a rousing return to Nashville’s iconic Ryman Auditorium on January 24, 2019.  As announced via Watson’s socials this week, opening the marquee date is a songwriter in-the-round lineup featuring some of his native Lonestar state’s songwriting royalty: Music Row hit makers Rodney Clawson, Liz Rose, and Tom Douglas.

Hailing from Gruver, TX, Clawson’s staggering 24 No. 1 songs include “I Saw God Today” (George Strait), “Amarillo Sky” (Jason Aldean) and “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney). Rose, born in Dallas, TX, had her first major hit with Gary Allan’s “Songs About Rain” and went on to co-write 16 songs with Taylor Swift, including “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “You Belong With Me,” and “Tim McGraw” plus the mega-hit “Girl Crush” (Little Big Town).  Douglas, who previously called TX home before moving to Music City, has written numerous number one hits, including “The House That Built Me” (Miranda Lambert), “I Got A Car” (George Strait), and “Meanwhile Back At Mama’s” (Tim McGraw).

Tickets to “A Night of Texas” at the Ryman start at $25 and may be purchased HERE.

Dubbed “triumphant” (Music Row)  and  “critic’s pick….arena ready country and Southern soul” (Nashville Scene), Watson’s debut headlining date at country music’s Mother Church was hugely successful, leading to the January 24 reprise.  With headlining ticket counts nearing the half million mark and 100+ sellout shows covering 40 states and 8 countries, Watson is gearing up to for his full 2019 tour, which kicks off at the start of the new year!

CAMILLE RAE EXPOSES VULNERABILITY WITH NEW VIDEO FOR "I NEED ME"

The Independent Artist Lands First Top 40 Single On Music Row

Camille Rae exposes her personal connection to her single “I Need Me” with the release of highly anticipated music video. Officially distributed to the public via Rae’s Facebook, director/photographer Jacob Long was able to capture the emotional depth that Rae wanted to portray through two separate shoots and about three different edits.

"Working with Camille Rae on this music video was all about bringing her vision for the song to life,” said Long. “We shot in a studio in downtown Knoxville where she gave a very real, very emotional performance in the video that comes through the screen. It shows her range and the scope of where she is headed as an artist." “’I Need Me’ is extremely important to me personally and artistically,” said Rae. “So I appreciate Jacob’s patience with me throughout this process. I was very particular about the music video’s sensitivity and the message I wanted to deliver. The lyrics are autobiographical about a situation where I felt like I was forced to conform to a life that didn’t fulfill my happiness… but I had the courage to make a change.”

Until recently, Rae wasn’t comfortable with talking about the exact change she made. Her initial decision becomes evident in the final scene of the music video when she takes off a diamond ring. The last frame is the piece of jewelry left alone on the windowsill and it is bone-chilling.
Previously, Rae has been described as, “if Adele was from the South,” by the online outlet Celeb Country Secrets, which led Rae to channel the icon’s music video for her smash hit “Hello”.
“We focused on honing in on facial expressions as they naturally occurred,” adds Long. “The simple, emotional elegance of Camille’s make-up running down her temples when she is singing from the floor was raw and in-the-moment.”

As of last week, “I Need Me” hit No. 34 on Music Row’s Country Breakout Chart. The ballad is the first of Rae’s radio singles to hit Top 40 in the country radio format. She is currently the fastest rising independent country artist to chart since Texan, Aaron Watson.

Originally from Mount Vernon, Ky., Rae has been sharing her talent with all whom would listen since the age of three. At 12, Rae began to craft her own songs and was a member of the Kentucky All-State Choir. She went on to complete her musical education at University of the Cumberlands and taught choir before focusing on her own artistry. Since 2012, Rae has opened for notable acts like The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, David Cook, Maddie and Tae, and more.

Rae works closely with Musicians On Call at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and is an avid supporter of St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.

INDEPENDENT ARTIST AARON WATSON PROVES AGAIN THAT YOU DON'T NEED A MAJOR LABEL TO BE A SUCCESS

AARON WATSON DEBUTS IN TOP 10 ON THE BILLBOARD 200 ALBUMS CHART WITH BIGGEST CAREER SALES AND #2 ON THE TOP COUNTRY ALBUMS CHART

ALBUM HITS #1 ON BILLBOARD’S INDEPENDENT ALBUMS CHART,
#1 ON iTUNES COUNTRY ALBUMS CHART AND #1 ALL-GENRE

Vaquero, the new album from independent country artist Aaron Watson debuts in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his biggest career sales week to date, and #2 on the Top Country Albums chart with 39,000 equivalent album units in total consumption. Vaquero landed at #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart across all genres. The singer-songwriter, with his groundswell of loyal fans, opened at #1 on iTunes Country Albums chart and has continued to stay perched in the top spot consistently for over a week. As momentum of the release increased over the week, Watson soared to #1 on the iTunes All-Genre chart. Watson made history in 2015 when his 10th studio album The Underdog hit #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart (26,000 albums sold), making him the first-ever independent, male country artist to debut in the coveted top spot. Watson’s rise was paved by years of hard work and perseverance, and his story is currently featured in an extensive 9-page piece in Texas Monthly’s March issue. Read the in-depth article, HERE.

On Friday, March 10th, Watson will make his national television debut on Fox & Friends morning show live from New York City.

Aaron Watson continues to dominate as a true independent in the country music arena. Marking off major milestones along the way, he’s gearing up to headline the opening night of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo on March 7th at NRG Stadium (home of the 2017 Super Bowl). Watson will be recording a live CD/DVD to capture the evening as the first artist permitted by HLSR to do so since George Strait in 2001. Watson recently performed for a sold-out crowd (70,000+) at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in the AT&T Center and he will be among the star-studded lineup for the Academy Of Country Music’s Party For A Cause Festival in Las Vegas, NV on April 1st.

Vaquero has released to overwhelming support from press, including Billboard, Rolling Stone Country, Noisey, The Boot, Taste Of Country and more. All have praised Watson’s well-crafted songs; his impressive path carved outside of the Nashville establishment and his steadfast commitment to his Texas roots. See more press highlights HERE.

"Above all, he is authentic. What you see is what you get. At a time when everyone and everything seems overly marketed, when we’re being constantly manipulated and sold to, the music of Aaron Watson can be awfully appealing. There’s no gimmick, no pretension, there’s certainly no irony.” – Texas Monthly

"Watson’s knack for shaping sharp, hooky choruses makes this eleventh edition to his catalog not just a worthy complement to ‘The Underdog,’ but a textbook example of his talents in a genre overflowing with shapeless, cookie cutter ‘bro country,’ little of which is half as enjoyable or well-crafted as the majority of ‘Vaquero’."

– American Songwriter

“…the most sprawling work Watson has ever done, blending country-rock, R’n’B-tinged love ballads, backwoods stories, an epic instrumental track and traditional country twang with ease.” – Austin American Statesman

Watson shared a snapshot of the last 18 years and his slow-and-steady climb to the top with fans via Facebook in a video that has gone viral, racking up over 6 million views, HERE.

INSIGHT FROM THE OTHER SIDE: GETTING TO KNOW ANDREW POPE

Every once in awhile, we like to hear from "the other side", the independent artists. We want them to share with you firsthand what their biggest obstacles are in the music industry and how they handle and overcome them, their insight as to what works and what they feel doesn't work, the best people to connect with and find out more about them. We connected with our friend, independent artist Andrew Pope, for the view from his side of the fence.

Andrew has written with some of country music's biggest names including Larry Bastian (“Rodeo” and “Unanswered Prayers”), Byron Hill (“Born Country” and “Nothin’ On But The Radio”), Larry Gatlin (“All The Gold In California”), and David Bellamy of the Bellamy Brothers (“Redneck Girl” and “Let Your Love Flow”). Country music legend Bobby Bare referred to Andrew as “the future of country music.”  Andrew's music is simple, it's genuine and it's honest. His debut album, “Here We Go” was released in November 2012 on the independent MillTown Music record label and includes 10 tracks written by Andrew as well as songs performed with artists such as Confederate Railroad and Jeff Cook from record breaking group Alabama. His new single “Stormchaser” is set to be released in January 2016 and is already receiving rave reviews.

Q: As an indie artist, people may not be familiar with your name. Give us a little insight into who you are as an artist, your background and what made you decide to get into music?

Andrew: Absolutely. My name is Andrew Pope and I am a songwriter/country singer from North Alabama. I've been playing music since I was about 7 or 8 I guess, but I've only been in the music business for 7 years now. There's a big difference in the two, but I love 'em both. I'm just a simple genuine country artist and my songs are real. I don't know if I got into music or music got into me, but either way it happened long before I realized it. Thank God. :)

Q: You may be an indie artist, but you've connected with some of country's greatest names. How did these connections come about and who are some of your favorite connections?

Andrew: I've been really lucky in that way. It's definitely a great feeling knowing that I've made such good friends with people that I grew up listening to on the radio as a kid. I still have to step back and soak that in some nights when I lay down. As far as how it came about, I think real recognizes real. Anyone that really knows me knows that I am always just me. I don't try to put on an act and be somebody I ain't. Bobby Bare is at the top of my favorite connections. I could never tell you how much our friendship means to me. He's given me lots of advice, introduced me to some of my heroes, and told me lots of stories that I will never forget. He's also a fan of mine and that's just weird to me, but I'm so humbled. David Bellamy is another guy that has become a great friend. I connect with people like Larry Gatlin and Bobby Bare more than I do Thomas Rhett. I like to believe that people see the authenticity in me and maybe that's why they keep me around. Ha ha. Its just the way I'm wired.

Q:  What is the hardest thing about being independent artist?

Andrew: Well, the hardest thing is the budget. Unless you're rich, chances are you are going to have a hard time, especially to begin with. This is a business. You're in constant competition with the big dogs (major labels) in that way. It's easier now than it was 3 years ago and in 2 more years, it will get easier.

Q: What are some of the good things about being independent?

Andrew: There's lots of great things.. Owning your own masters, creative control, but the number one best thing is that you are in total control of EVERY aspect of your career. If you work hard for it and the music is good, it will all find its way to where it needs to be.

Q: What's been your biggest accomplishment as an independent artist?

Andrew: I'd say my biggest accomplishment has been the relationships I've made. Its a very gratifying and humbling experience every day for me. Many of these relationships have become something way beyond business onto a personal level and I treasure those friendships dearly.

Q: What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career path?

Andrew: Work HARD, meet people, network, always strive to master your craft. Demand honest criticism from people that you trust. That's a big one for me and always has been. If something sucks, I want you to tell me. Don't tell me it's great.

Q; What are typical mistakes people make when trying to pursue this career?

Andrew: One of the big ones is getting so far in your career only to be "discovered" by someone in the business that promises to make your dreams come true. It's very important to have any contract reviewed by an attorney before signing your name. There are a few good people, but lots of bad ones. This business is cutthroat. Always protect YOU.

Q: If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose music and would you do anything differently?

Andrew: Well hell yes I would. Ha ha. I wouldn't change a thing.

Q: How important do you believe "image" is when it comes to music?

Andrew: Identity, not image. Be your own person. A true artist has an identity of their own. That's what makes them an artist. The 'powers that be' want you to be young and look like a GQ model. Image matters to the majors, but it really don't mean a damn thing to me. Its about the music.

Q: How would you advise artists when it comes to avoiding scams and rip offs?

Andrew: ALWAYS do your homework. And as I said earlier, don't sign anything without an attorney involved.

Q:  Have you affiliated with a performance rights organization such as ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC? What are the benefits of connecting with one of these organizations?

Andrew: I've been a member of BMI for about 6 years now I believe. Signing with a PRO is absolutely a MUST if you are choosing this career. The PRO's basically pay you a royalty when your song gets played. So yeah, do it.

Q; What message do you want your music to convey to a listener?

Andrew: Just that its real music. I'm real and my music is going to be. Always. I've always said I don't care anything about fame or being number one.. As long as I can make a living playing good music for good people that love country music and writing songs that I believe in, I've made it.

Q: You have new music in the works. What can we expect and when?

Andrew: Yeah, thank God. Ha ha. I have a new single called 'Stormchaser' and what you can expect is this.. steel guitar. :) It will be released on January 22, 2016.

Q: How do you prefer to sell your music? Do you use iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, etc?

Andrew: I'm an Apple guy so iTunes is definitely the number one place for me. I'm on Amazon and all those others too though.

Q: How important is social media? How can fans connect with you on social media?

Andrew: In the day that we live in now, you gotta be on social media. And not only that, but you have to know how to use it. I, myself, have watched training videos for HOURS online to learn about how to handle all the social media. Do whatever you have to do. Fans can tweet me at @TheAndrewPope. Twitter and Facebook are really the main ones I use. I use Instagram and all the others too - Facebook - www.facebook.com/AndrewPopeOfficial , Instagram - theandrewpope, Periscope - theandrewpope and Vine - theandrewpope.

"MUSIC APPRECIATION DAY": SUPPORT INDEPENDENT MUSIC - BUY 3 TRACKS

Today is "Cyber Monday", the biggest online shopping day of the year. In the spirit of buying local and supporting independent "musical entrepreneurs", let's make today "Music Appreciation Day" and include the purchase of music directly via the artist/musician or songwriter's website.

Did you realize that the purchase of 3 songs will cost you as much as some of us pay for a single cup of coffee and that those songs can last up to 10 years or longer? Your favorite independent musicians most likely write, produce and perform their own songs. This is more than a hobby to them, this is their livelihood and a profession that endures more rejection and criticism than most of us ever see in our daily jobs. This is what puts food on their tables, pays their rent and keeps us listening to our favorite music. As a culture, we simply HAVE to value original creativity or at some point, it will quietly go away. It’s that simple.

Instead of downloading illegally or burning a copy of your friend's cd, go to your favorite artist/musician/band/songwriter's website and simply buy 3 tracks. If they have a link to iTunes on their site, purchase it using that particular link. Use whatever link the artist promotes on their website to purchase their music or if they have an online store, even better!

Promote the idea of music appreciation. Every musician on the planet will thank you and the music will continue to support you.
