CONCERT REVIEW: A NIGHT WITH SKIP EWING AT THE CAROLINA COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS

Artist: Hit Singer/Songwriter Skip Ewing

Event: 2025 Carolina Country Music Awards

Venue: The Highlands Country Club - Fayetteville, NC

Date: 12/10/2025

Reviewer: Jennifer Smith

One day you're going about your business and a song comes out of nowhere and stops you in your tracks. That song for me was "The Gospel According to Luke" by Skip Ewing. I remember riding home late one night back the late 80's or early 90's after having dinner with a friend and we were listening to one of a "mix tape" of her favorite songs that she had burned onto a CD. Remember those good old days when you could do that? A song came on, she turned it up and asked me if I had ever heard of Skip Ewing. I told her I hadn't and she said he had recently put out a new cd called "The Coast of Colorado" and she just fell in love with this song. That night was the night I discovered a love of songwriters and discovered one of the best there is to ever put their heart to pen and paper. Through the years and research, I was amazed to find out that Skip was the one who created some of the best and most memorable songs in my playlist:

"Love, Me" - Collin Raye

"You Had Me At Hello" - Kenny Chesney

"Every Other Weekend" - Kenny Chesney & Reba McEntire

"Don't Mind If I Do" - George Strait

"I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore", "Someone Else's Star" and "Rebecca Lynn" - Bryan White

"I Would If I Could" - Lainey Wilson (and Ernest too!)

"I Believe" - Diamond Rio

"If I Didn't Have You" - Randy Travis

"Wish You Were Here" - Mark Wills

"Something That We Do" - Clint Black & Lisa Hartman Black

"Little Houses" - Doug Stone

"Answer To My Prayers" - Gordon Mote

There are so many more songs including his own amazing songs like "Wyoming", "Knots", "Road Dog" (cool fact, my dog Charlie is in the video), "Just a Kid", "The Way I Am" and "Always You". He just released a great new single, "I Want It All" from a soon to be released album and I can tell you this album will be one hell of a collection of some great music. The days of the Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Don Henley, Elton John, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Dean Dillon style of classic, simple yet long lasting impactful written classics may be slowing down but there are still writers who fall in those ranks out there and Skip Ewing is one of those names that will stay with you. He is a legend in the making.

In 2007, with the advent of social media and the growth of blogs, I felt it in me to do what I could to help those whose names were only found in liner notes or through word of mouth and started "Sound Advice", a promotions site to spread the word about writers as well as new upcoming and veteran artists who weren't getting the attention their music and talent should be. The industry didn't tend to recognize the talent behind the song at the time and the artists trying to build their audiences either didn't have the money to stuff the pockets of the industry "elite" who decide who should be getting the attention, those who weren't in a certain demographic, weren't "radio worthy, didn't have the "right image" to fit the current trend or they have "aged out". Good music is good music regardless of the money behind it, the audience size, the age or appearance of the artist. It's about how a song makes you feel and the impact it leaves with the listener long after the song ends, the radio is silent or the venue doors close. It never gets old and it stays long after the writers and artists are gone. The best songs aren't always on the radio and the best in the industry aren't always the ones standing on the stages winning industry awards. "Sound Advice" morphed into "Lovin' Lyrics" and has played the role of David, standing up in an industry of Goliaths for about 20 years. I will load rocks in my sling and go to battle for these people any day of the week. I want to see artists who have heard "no" for so long realize that the "yes" is out there and it may not be the type of "yes" that results in sold out arenas, multi-million internet streams or a big paycheck. It may be a change in the direction of someone whose life was on the wrong path, it may be the words that someone at rock bottom needed to start the journey upwards, it may be the encouragement needed to start over, and it may literally save a life. Words mean everything. When they are combined with the right notes and the right melody, it is heard by someone and that is the "hit" that matters most. This passion for music lead me right back to Skip.

After connecting with Skip via social media a couple of years ago, I was invited to attend the 2025 Carolina Country Music Awards Christmas Show at the Highlands Country Club in Fayetteville, NC earlier this week where he would be receiving the CCMA Gold Medal and be the featured performer of the evening. I can't even explain how much this meant or how the appreciation for his talent has deepened after spending time with him in person and hearing him sing and the stories behind the songs.

My friend, Tammy, and I arrived at the venue, walked into the foyer, and then into the beautifully decorated ballroom which was full of suits and ties, sparkling Christmas dresses, high heels, new hairdos and holiday finest. Then there was us, standing there in our jeans and gussied up sweaters and thinking "Uh, we aren't blending. LOL". We sat at Skip's reserved table with the best people, Steve the Greek and Rhonda from STG Marketing. Steve and I connected like crazy old friends and laughed literally most of the night. Rhonda was laughing at us, it was great. It's like Skip knew the misfits needed to sit together and it was so much fun. I can't remember a night where I smiled ALL night long. The salad, filet mignon, mashed potatoes, green beans and dark chocolate mousse were AMAZING. I'd like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful wait staff of the night, especially our server William who kept sneaking up behind me and scaring the beetlejuice out of me and making me laugh so hard. He got his payback later when I came back from the restroom and he had his back turned. I win. LOL!

The awards were handed out and Skip took the stage and performed random parts of his hit songs and told the stories before them and it was soooo good. His Christmas portion of the night was exactly what we needed. He sang his rocked out "Better Watch Out", the story of "Christmas Carol" and his songs that celebrated the birth of Jesus, the true joy and reason for the season - "Whenever a Child is Born" and "Just a Kid". These moments truly captivated every person in that room. Being in Fayetteville, the home of Fort Bragg and the 82nd Airborne, he sang his personal version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as told through the eyes of our service men and women and dedicated it to those who serve "America the Beautiful" every day and being home for Christmas is only in their dreams, combining the lyrics of "America the Beautiful" and the Christmas classic. I won't lie, I had tears. He then asked the room to be part of his Christmas and he started quietly singing "Silent Night" and the whole room sang with him. There probably weren't too many dry eyes in the house. It reminded us of simpler times, the joy and reason for the season, and when the best Christmas gift wasn't the latest iPhone or the latest video games, it was the love of family and the love of a child that changed the world.

As a person, he is the same as his songs, authentic and pure gold. I watched him interacting with new artists in the room like Paige King Johnson (Tour of the Year and Music Video of the Year winner), Jason Lee Cook (Male Artist of the Year winner), Katie Caulder Godowns (Female Artist of the Year winner), Michael Schott (an amazing 14 year old songwriter who won the Entertainer of the Year award), Sophie Taylor (Single of the Year winner for "Back to You"), Whiskey Revelation (Vocal Group of the Year winners) and others in attendance and it was really nice to seeing him truly want to connect with these artists and share his thoughts on writing and performing. He did not overlook a single person in that room who wanted some of his time. He is a rare commodity in this world - his heart is genuine and his need to just write and release music that reaches hearts matters more than the numbers he reaches on the charts is something that's been missing from music for a long time. How can you not support that especially in a world where so much new music is trending towards being easily and artificially created, driven by dollar signs and sadly forgettable? Skip Ewing and the music he writes are none of those things and I, for one, am grateful for that night in that car so long ago.

Music changes lives and I can attest that Skip changed mine. Thank you may be two small words but they can never express the amount of gratitude I have for this songwriter and the gift God gave him.

- Jenn

Please take some time and connect with Skip and if you have a chance, go see him perform. It's worth it.

Singer/songwriter Elvie Shane has released his latest single. “Does Heaven Have A Creek,” available today.

Written solo in the days before recording his imminent album "DAMASCUS", “Does Heaven Have A Creek” came from a question Shane once asked himself following the passing of his grandmother, about what really matters, and what comes next. His alluring vocals take you to church, with the heartland hymn serving as another reminder of how the Kentucky native "forces you to rethink anything you think you know, or assume, about the genre’s Music Row bros” (Stereogum).
“‘Does Heaven Have A Creek’ is simply the wondering mind of a believer,” said Shane. “A testimony of hope that Heaven has a few of the simple pleasures we enjoy here on earth. Is Heaven only for A-List Christians? Is there room for a prodigal ‘Good Ole Boy’ from Kentucky just trying to live a decent life and be a good man?”

The track comes as the sixth release from Shane’s sophomore album "DAMASCUS", releasing April 19th. Full of unflinching honesty rooted in compassionate clarity, each track steps into the shoes of another, with Shane taking pieces of each character he’s met on his path, melding them into one beautifully woven work. The album is available for pre-order/pre-save/pre-add HERE.

One of Nashville Scene’s “2024 Artists to Watch,” Shane has already garnered buzz for the project, with releases of “Baptized,” “Jonesin’” and “Forgotten Man,” with the latter dubbed “an ode to blue-collar workers that exposes the heart-aching realities of the working class,” (Billboard), and with his track “Pill,” critics praised its gripping honesty as it “further cements Shane as a new voice of the damaged, addicted, and lost in country music,” (Rolling Stone). Shane also recently released “What Do I Know,” along with a moving video to accompany the track featuring a cameo by John Carter Cash, available to watch HERE.

KEEP UP WITH ELVIE SHANE

SINGER SONGWRITER KIMBERLY KELLY RELEASES “BLUE JEAN COUNTRY QUEEN,” FEATURING STEVE WARINER

Track is Featured on Forthcoming 12-Song, Label Debut,
I’ll Tell You What’s Gonna Happen, Set for Release July 8

On the heels of the announcement of her label debut, I’ll Tell You What’s Gonna Happen, arriving July 8 via Show Dog Nashville in partnership with Thirty Tigers, singer/songwriter Kimberly Kelly releases another taste from the forthcoming album with “Blue Jean Country Queen” featuring Steve Wariner.  Produced by Brett Tyler, Kelly’s husband and a hit songwriter himself with No. 1s like “Cold Beer Calling My Name” under his belt, and written by Kelly, Tyler and Wariner the upbeat track is an ode to confident women with the chorus declaring:

She’s a blue jean country queen
A honky tonk heart attack
Boots to her knees fringe on her sleeves
And horns on her Cadillac
Momma’s prayer, and daddy’s nightmare,
Made for the neon lights
She’s a blue jean country queen
Looking for a king tonight

“It was the first-time meeting and writing with Steve for both Brett and I,” shares Kelly. “Brett was complementing Steve on his signature tempo like the one on ‘Nothin' but the Taillights’ that he wrote, and I already had the title ‘Blue Jean Country Queen’ which just seemed right for a Steve tempo. Then to top it off, Steve ended up playing guitar on the song. He had us out to his home studio to play us the track. It was incredible. This track might be the theme of the whole album.”

“It was so fun writing this with Kimberly and Brett, even if it was via Zoom,” shares Wariner. “I LOVE this record! It’s a country ‘mini movie’ wrapped up in three and a half minutes. Kimberly absolutely lays it down! So proud to be in on this one!”

The new track follows the release of nostalgic song-of-summer ready track, “Summers Like That” which left Billboard praising Kelly’s “warm, lifting voice.” Written by Karyn Rochelle and Bobby Tomberlin and produced by Tyler, the song not only name checks a number of classic 90s country hits but is also sonically, reminiscence of some of Kelly’s biggest influences, artist like Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Brooks & Dunn and Deana Carter.

A native of Lorena, Texas, Kelly spent years in both the Texas and Nashville music scenes earning an education in experiences that have made her both fearless in her approach to creating and unafraid to defy convention when it comes to industry expectations. Those years of hard work, all while also earning a Master’s degree and working fulltime, culminated last summer in a long-awaited record deal with Show Dog Nashville. Now she is set to make her label debut.

Off stage Kelly possess an inviting warmth mixed with sly self-deprecation, a winsome combo only earned with some life experience, self-awareness and nothing to prove on stage just the goods to stop a listener in their tracks. "This is not my first rodeo," Kelly says of her label debut. "I worked really hard in Texas before I came to Nashville. I wrote songs, put out records, did a radio tour, and played every weekend while going to school and working full-time.”

The album’s title, I’ll Tell You What’s Gonna Happen, is a clever nod to her friend and fellow Texas musician, the late Country Music Hall of Famer, Billy Joe Shaver. The abbreviated quote comes from the better-than-fiction-true story of Shaver forcing his way into a Waylon Jennings recording session after the star tried to renege on recording some of his songs. Brushing off a $100 bill to go away, Shaver said to Jennings, "I'll tell you what's gonna happen. You're gonna either listen to these songs or I'm gonna whip your ass." Waylon agreed to listen to one. The rest is history in the form of Jennings' 1973 Honky Tonk Heroes album, on which every song but one was written by Shaver.

“I landed on this album title on a dare," Kelly says. "I was like, 'Sure. What do I care?' I did the Texas music scene, I’ve done time in Nashville, and I thought my time had passed when I got offered my record deal. My husband could keep writing songs and I'd just be a speech therapist. So I made this album like it's the last one I'll ever get to make and the title is my mantra so to speak. I love good songs, and I let the best ones win whether I wrote them or not. It’s a compilation I’m proud of, and I’m thrilled for people to hear them!”

I’ll Tell You What’s Gonna Happen Track List:

1.) “Honky Tonk Town” (Jessi Alexander, Jessie Jo Dillon & Brett Tyler):
2.) “Some Things Have a Name” (Bob DiPiero & Troy Johnson)
3.) “Summers Like That” (Karyn Rochelle & Bobby Tomberlin)
4.) “Why Can't I” (Bob DiPiero & Karyn Rochelle)

JASON NIX RELEASES LEAD SONG OFF FORTHCOMING CONCEPT PROJECT: “MARY WANNA”

New Release Follows Songwriter’s Recent ACM Award Win for Song of the Year (“Things A Man Oughta Know”)

Following his recent ACM Award win for Song of the Year as a writer on Lainey Wilson’s Gold-certified No. 1 hit “Things A Man Oughta Know,” in-demand songwriter Jason Nix now presents himself as a must-hear artist with today’s release of “Mary Wanna” via Jody Williams Songs/Warner Chappell Music.

“‘Mary Wanna’ is the song that got my wheels turning again on releasing music as a solo artist. I love the way it makes me feel,” reflects Nix of the track produced by Chip Matthews. “I’ve always wanted to do a concept album and ‘Mary Wanna’ paints a very clear picture of what Mary’s role will be in this story. She’s a rebel who feels trapped by her parents’ idea of who she should be; she feels smothered by her community’s expectations of how a young woman should act. She is desperately looking for the freedom to find out who she is, even if it means breaking some hearts along the way.”

Released as the first introduction to a concept project Nix plans to release in the coming months, ‘Mary Wanna’ is a windows-down, singalong tribute to the renegade title character and all the women living life on their own terms that she represents.

“This song is the cornerstone for a project I didn’t realize I was starting at the time and was born from a personal experience that I never intended to write about,” Nix adds. “Mary gave me the opportunity to write about the things I’ve been holding onto for years.”

LEGENDARY SINGER/SONGWRITER WOOD NEWTON RELEASES NEW SINGLE "A MINUTE AGO" TO RADIO

Legendary singer and songwriter Wood Newton, most known for writing or co-writing such hits as "Bobby Sue,” for the Oakridge Boys, "Twenty Years Ago,” for Kenny Rogers, and more, is excited to announce the release of his latest single, “A Minute Ago.” Released on Sucarnochee Records, “A Minute Ago,” was written by Country artists Carl Ray, Jacky Wayne White (AKA Jacky Jack White), and Wood Newton, produced by Mike Loudermilk.

“A Minute Ago,” is a song about two lovers in Mississippi and how life, love, and romance can change so quickly, and many times before you realize it. The chorus sums it all up: “It was a different time a minute ago, before my heart said I told you so. How was I supposed to know that things would end this way? So sad, but true, the way I feel, guess I probably always will, the girl who once made time stand still is going back to Tupelo. It was a different time a minute ago."

Wood Newton is an American songwriter and musician based in Nashville, Tennessee. Newton was born in Hampton, Arkansas, and graduated from Hampton High School in 1964. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1970.

In 1978 and 1979, Newton recorded for Elektra Records, charting the singles, "Last Exit for Love,” "Lock, Stock & Barrel,” and “Julie Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?”. He later became a songwriter for other artists with his credits including Razzy Bailey's number one single, "Midnight Hauler". Newton has been an advocate for songwriters throughout his career, on occasion, speaking before Congress regarding bills or laws that may harm artists and/or songwriters in the music business. Newton is a relentless writer and incredible lyricist. His love for life and music is undeniable. His songwriting genius is astounding and this latest single from Newton, "A Minute Ago,” is a great addition to this legend's discography.

ALLIE COLLEEN RELEASES SPINE TINGLING AND EMPOWERING SINGLE, “HALOS AND HORNS”, PRODUCED BY LEE BRICE AND JERROD NIEMANN

Singer/Songwriter, Allie Colleen, who wants her music to be categorized as great music more than a specific genre, announced the digital release of her new spine-tingling and empowering single, “Halos and Horns,” produced by Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann and co-engineered by Cody LaBelle and Allie Colleen. The Outlaw Country tune depicts a picture of cowboys and angels torn between leather and lace, evil and good. The song was penned by Eric Dodd, Stephen Hunley and Allie Colleen. Allie knew when they were writing this one it was going to be big, a piece to the puzzle to her as an artist and her sound. She believes in women and believes in country music and this song showcases how much women belong in Country music. Women are outlaws and cowboys. Women are tough and outwork anyone around us. This song is not Allie Colleen trying to hang with the boys, but to hopefully encourage listeners that there are women out there making some rad country music right now and there is a place for women at the table.

“Halos and Horns” can be found today on all digital music platforms and is available for streaming and digital download at halosandhorns_ac.

“My whole life has been a clash of 'everything that is a blessing; is a curse.' It has made me who I am. Everything about me, about all of us as individuals, seems to come with a challenge or an opinion. It has been a huge focus of mine lately and through the creation of “Halos and Horns” to accept all those things about myself and put them to work” shared Allie Colleen. “I love this song and how it showcases one of the many sides of Allie Colleen and who I am as an artist.”

“The first time I met Allie, she was writing a song with my wife, Sara, and I was so taken back by this connective voice. Fast forward a year, I watched her play a show out on the road with me, she was barefoot and commanding a crowd like they were her family and best friends, something I haven’t seen in a long time, she has this thing with them no one can describe. When she asked me to be a part of producing some music with her, I was honored and I am so excited for the world to hear her. She knows what she wants. She loves what she does. You cannot ask for much more than that!" exclaimed co-producer, Lee Brice.

“Having the chance to team up with Allie, Lee and our engineer Cody, was one of my favorite moments in Nashville. Helping her bring her vision of “Halos and Horns” to life was truly special. She’s a real artist, with the voice, mind and songwriting skills to prove it,” expressed co-producer Jerrod Niemann.

"I’m a Sunday morning sinner in a white church
On my knees praying ‘til it hurts
In the back row with all the other lost souls

I’m a double shot of whiskey in a dive bar
A cowboy looking for a wild card I can take home
‘Fore the sun I’m long gone

I’m boiling hot I’m freezing cold
I’m holding on I’m letting go
Don’t know why I can’t pick a side

I’m sure fire bet and long shot gamble
Easy to love but I’m hard to handle now
I’m an angel mixed with a hell bent rebel
Gotta heart of gold, I’m silver tongue devil

I don’t know why I’m always torn
Tween the halo and the horns

I’m an 8-second rider tryna make it last
A long haul trucker tryna get there fast
Like a dust cloud, only see me on my way out

Tougher than the leather in the Bible Belt
Softer than pedals of a mission bell
I’ll make your blood burn, You’ll like it when
it hurts

I don’t know why I’m always torn
Just the way I am, I was born
Tween the halo and the horns"

KIMBERLY KELLY ANNOUNCES LABEL DEBUT COMING 7/8 - NEW SONG "SUMMERS LIKE THAT" AVAILABLE NOW

The 12-Song, Show Dog Nashville Debut
in Partnership with Thirty Tigers
Set for Release July 8

Delivers First Taste of New Music with Nostalgic “Summers Like That

A native of Lorena, Texas, singer/songwriter Kimberly Kelly has spent years in both the Texas and Nashville music scenes earning an education in experiences that have made her both fearless in her approach to creating and unafraid to defy convention when it comes to industry expectations. Those years of hard work, all while also earning a Master’s degree and working fulltime, culminated last summer in a long-awaited record deal with Show Dog Nashville. Now she is set to make her label debut with the album, I'll Tell You What's Gonna Happen, available July 8, via Show Dog Nashville in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Pre-order or pre-save HERE.

Produced by Brett Tyler, Kelly’s husband and a hit songwriter himself with No. 1s like “Cold Beer Calling My Name” under his belt, the album’s title is a clever nod to her friend and fellow Texas musician, the late Country Music Hall of Famer, Billy Joe Shaver.

The abbreviated quote used for the title comes from the better-than-fiction-true story of Shaver forcing his way into a Waylon Jennings recording session after the star tried to renege on recording some of his songs.

Kelly is sharing a first taste of the album with the nostalgic song-of-summer ready track, “Summers Like That.” Written by Karyn Rochelle and Bobby Tomberlin and produced by Tyler, the song not only name checks a number of classic 90s country hits but is also sonically, reminiscence of some of Kelly’s biggest influences, artist like Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Brooks & Dunn and Deana Carter. Listen to “Summers Like That” HERE.

“Not only does this song namedrop ‘Strawberry Wine,’ ‘Walk Away Joe,’ and a slew more of my favorites, but it has the same feel as those songs, which I love. A very relatable story that allows you to get lost in the emotion,” shares Kelly. “It reminds me of ‘Maybe It Was Memphis,’ in that way. The 90s are back in the fashion industry and other genres of music…let’s bring them back in country music too.”

Well it crushed my heart when he had to go
My first taste of a walkaway Joe
You don't ever forget it when it cuts that deep
The first time you fall is so bittersweet

I can still hear dust on the bottle
Sitting on the hood of a 02 model Mustang
Sipping on Boones
Getting my first buzz to a neon moon
By the magic of the moment, never felt that way before

They don't make summers like that no more

DEBUT ALBUM STACK OF RECORDS RELEASED LAST MONTH

Quickly making a name from himself, Big Loud Records rising star Larry Fleet partners with PEOPLE to premiere the final video in his Live from the Ryman series, wrapping with his critically-acclaimed track “Where I Find God."

PEOPLE dubs Fleet as a "Country Music Truthteller" in a recent interview with the rising Country artist. "It's a pretty deep one, that's for sure," Fleet tells PEOPLE of the song he wrote alongside songwriter Connie Harrington and whose music video has now garnered nearly 19 million views. The Live from the Ryman series started its rollout earlier this month launching with the title track from Fleet’s first full-length album STACK OF RECORDS. The week after he released “Heart On My Sleeve (Live from the Ryman),” followed by the poignant but clever “Three Chords And A Lie (Live from the Ryman).

A lifetime-in-the-making project co-written entirely by the Tennessee native himself, the new album drops the needle on a charismatic baritone and eclectic fusion of Country, Southern Rock and Soul, with 14 tracks and star-studded collaborations featuring Jon Pardi, Jamey Johnson and Bryan Sutton. Shaped and inspired by the record collection Fleet grew up with, STACK OF RECORDS was produced by chart-topping studio ace Joey Moi and finds a new Country talent stepping fully into the spotlight.

Edgehill Music Publishing co-founders Josh and Tara Joseph announced today the signing of artist and songwriter Alex Smith to an exclusive publishing agreement. The Louisiana native has been in the studio with producer Kent Wells working on a project that will be released soon.

“Alex was one of the first writers we were introduced to when we started Edgehill Music Publishing,” said Tara and Josh Joseph jointly. “His attitude, work ethic and especially his creativity are a perfect match for this growing company.”

Born in Alexandria, Louisiana to a musical family, Smith picked up his first guitar at age 15 and began learning songs on YouTube. His first public performances were in church and later in local clubs and bars. He made his first trip to Nashville in 2015 and made the permanent move to Music City to pursue his dreams a year later. A writer and story-teller at heart, his upcoming project features noted blues musician Sonny Landreth, hit writer Leslie Satcher and his own father, H.B. Smith.

“Alex brings an infectious attitude everywhere he goes, and that carries over into his writes and in the studio, ” said Kent Wells, who also serves as Edgehill’s Creative Director. “We’re excited to have him in the Edgehill family, and we can’t wait to share the music we’ve been making.”

"I feel so blessed to have this opportunity,” said Alex. “I came to Nashville to write songs, and Edgehill and their amazing team have turned a dream into reality. I can't wait for everyone to hear the music and see what the future holds!"

CARLY PEARCE & ASHLEY MCBRYDE COMBINE FORCES FOR “NEVER WANTED TO BE THAT GIRL”

Few can keep up with Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde in the songwriting and wide-open vocal department; especially as the woman whose “Next Girl” was the only Country song cited by TIME as a “Song of the Summer” is mining her own tumult and deep, soul-shaking disappointment, while the “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” continues to prove naysayers wrong with her latest project, Never Will, as it became the only Country album nominated for Country Album of the Year by the ACM, CMA and Recording Academy in the same award season. Now, with the two powerful songstresses combining forces, the ravaged Country tradition of the hard truth cheating song is reignited with brand-new single “Never Wanted To Be That Girl.”

Written by Pearce, McBryde and co-producer Shane McAnally, the clarity bomb is sung from the perspective of two women – the single girl thanking the guy who helped change her flat tire and the wife at home – discovering the man they’re involved with has someone else. The shattering truth in a text – for McBryde – and the reality of where he’s been when he gets home – for Pearce – finds the two women reeling as they consider their own blind spots in a painfully sobering moment.

“Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them,” Pearce explains. “You never see it coming, but there’s always an explanation. You know, who’d ever want to think that way about someone they love. Why would you? And so, that’s where this song started: the things you don’t see, because you’d never look.

“Ashley is such a great drop-into-the-moment writer, she was able to bring that reality bomb truth to what we were doing,” continues Pearce. “She’s fearless, and she understands human nature in a way that let us both really write to the hurt of realizing we’ve been lied to by someone we’re intimate with.”

“Carly isn’t afraid to face the less potable subjects,” McBryde offers. “As a writer she’s willing to get in there and get very honest. Writing this song together with Shane strengthened our friendship and taught us more about one another and ourselves. Seriously, nobody wants to be the other woman. And when you find you are … damn. It’s such a gut punch.”

The third track from 29: WRITTEN IN STONE, which expands Pearce’s original seven-song 29 recording to 15 songs, “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” arrives at Country radio today via Big Machine Records and Warner Music Nashville. The high-drama, real woman duet is available to listen to now: https://CarlyPearce.lnk.to/NWTBTGPR.

In a chaotic year, Pearce has found strength in her music, whether it’s the songs she’s written, being inducted as the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry or touring as direct support on Lady A’s current tour. With PEOPLE proclaiming “with the title song as its heart-wrenching centerpiece... It may well stand as the most pathos-infused divorce song since Tammy Wynette's ‘D-I-V-O-R-C-E.’” Entertainment Weekly offering “the kind of ugly truths you can only find in a broken relationship,” Billboard opining “see-sawing between despair and hope, swagger and sorrow -- fearlessly mining her own life,” and TIME raving “an epic tale of heartbreak at the hands of a 21st-century Lothario,” 29: WRITTEN IN STONE raises the stakes.

As the Kentucky strong vocalist has said, “The more my life unraveled, the more the songs lifted me up. As the smoke cleared, some unbelievable things have happened – and more songs came pouring out. To be able to make 29: Written in Stone, to sing with Ashley or Patty Loveless, those are dreams you don’t dare to dream.”

For McBryde, her critically acclaimed career continues its ascent, most recently with three consecutive nights of sold out shows at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium as part of her headlining This Town Talks Tour, where she was presented with a plaque commemorating the Platinum-certification of her most recent single, “One Night Standards.” Her 2018 major label debut GIRL GOING NOWHERE charmed the New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Paste, The Washington Post and more, all en route to landing a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album, her first of four nominations to date and an honor that was repeated with follow-up album NEVER WILL, released in early 2020. The music itself is stadium-ready rock-and-roll with a bluegrass wink or two and country music’s storytelling heart––and McBryde, no longer new, is the music’s ordained and highly capable standard bearer.

29: WRITTEN IN STONE releases worldwide on Friday (9/17) via Big Machine Records. Fans can pre-order HERE.
