CD Review: "Livin' to be Free" - Mary Selvidge

CD: "Livin' to Be Free

If you love the honest, truthful country sounds of artists like Lorrie Morgan, Reba and Mary Chapin Carpenter , then you're gonna love what Mary Selvidge has to offer. Hailing from Bailey, NC and placing 2nd place in the southeast regional finals of the Colgate Country Showdown, Mary has released her debut cd,"Livin' to Be Free". Her songwriting and lyrics are simple and come from a place that most seem to have forgotten about, the heart. While the songwriting may be simple, her vocals are anything but. With strong, solid vocals, her songs tell a story and evoke passion and emotion, which is what good songwriting was meant to do. To listen to Mary, you would swear you've heard her on the radio before, but you haven't. Again, another outstanding artist overshadowed by current trends in the industry.

Mary's cd, "Livin' to be Free ", features some of country music's best and most well known studio musicians including Mark Casstevens, Glen Duncan and Steve Hinson who have also recorded with Garth Brooks. The talent of these musical artists combined with Mary's strength and fortitude make a great combination and that reflects on this cd. Mary believes in what she writes and that is more than evident in the way she performs each song. Again, another cd that I honestly can't find fault with. There's not a bad song on it, not one cringeworthy note and not one reason not to recommend it to those who love good traditional country music.
