NASHVILLE'S MUSIC INDUSTRY GATHERED TO HONOR THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF LEGENDARY SONGWRITER WILL JENNINGS

L-R: Vince Gill, Lilly Winwood, Kerry Marx, Mark Beckett, Amy Grant, Wendy Moten, Emmylou Harris, Larry Paxton, Rodney Crowell and Katherine Marx.

The music community gathered yesterday afternoon at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater for a Celebration of Life for one of their own, Will Jennings, who passed away on September 6, 2024 in his home in Tyler, TX at the age of 80.

Jennings was one of the most revered songwriters of his generation, penning an extraordinary number of timelessly beloved songs for an eclectic range of musical icons like Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, B.B. King, Celine Dion and Tim McGraw to name a few.

The Celebration of Life was a poignant and joyful reflection of Jennings' monumental contributions to music, featuring highlights of his career with personal testimonies from fellow songwriters, artists, and friends who spoke about his kindness, creativity, and impact on the music industry. Performances of some of Jennings' most beloved songs followed, with artists who had worked alongside him offering renditions of his classics that spanned decades. Special guest appearances and performances included Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Emmylou Harris, Wendy Moten and Lilly Winwood (daughter of Steve Winwood).

A particularly touching moment during the event was a video from Steve Winwood, honoring his friend Will Jennings as he spoke about a particular piece of music that Jennings would always play for him. Winwood recalled a particular time, about 10 years ago, when he then sang this melody to Jennings. Winwood said he will always remember that moment and he will always remember Will.

Jennings was widely recognized for his extraordinary songwriting ability and his impact on the world of music, crafting songs that have resonated with generations of listeners from country to pop. Born in Kilgore Texas, and relocated to Tyler, Texas as a child, Jennings primarily loved the iconic blues songs influenced by B.B. King. He recognized that he couldn’t make a living writing three-chord songs about the Blues, so he studied poetry and earned degrees that landed him a job as an Associate Professor of English and French literature at the University of Wisconsin. Jennings’ love of music overwhelmed his Desire to teach, and he eventually decided to move to Nashville to write songs. That move caught the attention of music publisher Lance Freed, who signed Jennings to a publishing deal in 1974. In 2023, Lance Freed, All Clear Music and Fuji Music Group acquired 100% interest in the publishing rights and writer’s share to Jennings’ entire catalog of music.

“On behalf of everyone at Sheltered Music, we have gathered among some of the industry’s top talent to recognize and celebrate Will's incredible life and legacy,” said Darrell Franklin, SVP at Sheltered Music Publishing. “Will wasn’t just a master of words, but he wrote songs for the common man. He understood that language and spoke to their hearts. His work will undoubtedly continue to inspire songwriters and music lovers for generations to come."

It was Jennings’ work with Clapton on the timeless classic “Tears in Heaven” that catapulted him to global recognition. The song, written in the wake of Clapton’s tragic loss of his son, not only became an international hit but also won multiple Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year. Jennings' biggest hit remains the 1997's Titanic theme "My Heart Will Go On." The song, written by Jennings and composer James Horner and sung by Celine Dion, earned numerous Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes, becoming the most-played radio hit in history according to the Songwriter Hall of Fame.

He’s been called the greatest American lyricist of the late 20th century with numerous recognizable hits including “Up Where We Belong,” "Can’t We Go On Together,” "I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” "People Alone,” “Back in the High Life Again,” “My Father’s Eyes,” “Free Fallin,” “While You See a Chance,” “Please Remember Me,” “Where Are You Christmas,” "Somewhere in the Night,” and “Street Life.” Jennings also co-wrote "Higher Love" with Steve Winwood, which landed on Billboard’s Hot 100 as a #1 song.

Jennings received numerous Golden Globe Awards and two songs, “My Heart Will Go On” and “Up Where We Belong,” both received Academy Awards along with an additional four songs that were nominated for Song of the Year by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. His resume also includes awards of recognition including inductions into both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York and The Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame in Austin, Texas.

In addition to his songwriting achievements, Jennings’ impact extended beyond the music itself. His advocacy for songwriters’ rights and his involvement in mentoring younger generations of musicians left an indelible mark on the industry. His passing marked the end of an era, but his timeless songs will remain a testament to his extraordinary talent. Will Jennings legacy lives on through his music, his influence, and the memories shared by those who were fortunate enough to know him and work alongside him.

Will Jennings is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Carole Thurman and by two sisters, Joyce and Gloria.

Production on Season III is complete, and the fast-paced show featuring intimate performances from some of music’s greatest stars and the iconic songs that launched and propelled their careers will premiere nationwide on January 8, 2022.

THE SONG’s new season features Rockers Collective Soul, Melissa Etheridge, Styx, and Rob Thomas, Pop songstresses Amy Grant and Sarah McLachlan, Soul singer Brian McKnight, Pop singer songwriter icon Kenny Loggins and Country star Gary Allan - all performing the songs that made them famous in this exciting weekly show reaching over 80 million households on 150 stations.

“We’ve been amazed week after week how viewers are connecting with these artists and their songs in this unique presentation,” said the show’s creator and Executive Producer Marc Oswald. “This new season is incredibly diverse and we can’t wait to kick off the new year with these legendary artists performing truly remarkable songs.”

The show is produced by Tupelo Honey and Oswald Entertainment Group, directed by renowned film and still photographer David “Doc” Abbott, written, edited and produced by Stephen Wallen and Scott Kono and booked by legendary talent producer Tisha Fein and talent coordinator Clay Myers. Season III is hosted by Krista Marie and includes a combination of episodes produced at various locations in Music City and on the road. THE SONG crew traveled to a private estate in Sherman, CT to film two episodes with Rob Thomas. Kenny Loggins and Sarah McLachlan were both lensed in California, Loggins at The Alcazar Theatre in Carpinteria and McLachlan at Hotel del Coronado. Collective Soul’s episode was shot at Atlanta’s Buckhead Theatre, and Brian McKnight’s episode was captured across town at Terminal West. Gary Allan and Amy Grant’s episodes were shot at Nashville’s Analog at Hutton Hotel and Blackbird Studio, respectively, and Melissa Etheridge performed at the show’s home base, TGL Farms near Nashville Tennessee. To top it all off, the Styx episode was shot following the band’s performance at the beautiful new Hard Rock Casino in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“This is a massive undertaking, but we’re excited to continue to grow and develop this show,” said the show’s Executive Producer Cary Glotzer, CEO and Chief Content Officer of Tupelo Honey, a Gray Television Company.

Season I was filmed exclusively at TGL Farms and kicked off with such iconic stars as All-4-One, Big & Rich, CeeLo Green, Don McLean, Rick Springfield, Rome Ramirez featuring Dirty Heads, Travis Tritt, and Gretchen Wilson. Season II of THE SONG traveled coast to coast to visit Jason Mraz at the Mraz Family Farm, Pat Monahan and Train at Concannon Vineyard in Northern California, Jewel in the Colorado Rockies high above Telluride, Richard Marx on the beautiful cliffs of Malibu, Clint Black at Analog at Hutton Hotel Nashville and the Marleys at the world famous Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Shooting wrapped where it all began, with Gavin DeGraw at TGL Farms outside Nashville, Tennessee.

The show is presented by Ally and brought to you by partnerships with Harley-Davidson, Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos, and powered by KICKER Performance Audio.

Earlier this year, THE SONG announced an exclusive partnership with Time Life to release live performances recorded exclusively for the show. NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT AMY GRANT, TOBY KEITH, RHETT AKINS, BUDDY CANNON AND JOHN SCOTT SHERRILL

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR WORDS, YOUR EXPERIENCES, YOUR HEARTBREAK AND YOUR JOY. YOU CHANGE LIVES WITH EVERY WORD.

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (NaSHOF) has announced its Class of 2021: Amy Grant, Toby Keith, Rhett Akins, Buddy Cannon and John Scott Sherrill. The five will be inducted into the Hall this November, according to an announcement made today by Sarah Cates, chair of the organization’s board of directors, and Mark Ford, its executive director.

The five new inductees-elect will join the 213 previously inducted members of the elite organization when they are officially inducted during the “50/51” Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala on Monday, November 1, at the Music City Center. Because the organization’s 50th Anniversary celebration was postponed last year, this year’s event will honor two classes in a special double-sized event that will also spotlight NaSHOF’s previously named Class of 2020: Steve Earle, Bobbie Gentry, Kent Blazy, Brett James and Spooner Oldham.

"Today is one of my favorite days of the year, as we begin our journey to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala in November with the announcement of our upcoming class,” says Cates. "Nashville has always been the home of legendary songs written by the world’s finest songwriters – and this class is no exception. It’s our great honor today to welcome our class of 2021: Rhett Akins and Buddy Cannon in the songwriter category; John Scott Sherrill in the veteran songwriter category; Toby Keith as our songwriter/artist and Amy Grant as our veteran songwriter/artist.”

Rhett Akins’ songwriter credits include his own “That Ain’t My Truck,” as well as “Honey Bee” (Blake Shelton) and “It Goes Like This” (Thomas Rhett). Buddy Cannon’s resume is known for “Set ’Em Up Joe” (Vern Gosdin), “I’ve Come To Expect It From You” (George Strait) and “Give It Away” (George Strait). John Scott Sherrill’s hits include “Wild And Blue” (John Anderson), “The Church On Cumberland Road” (Shenandoah) and “How Long Gone” (Brooks & Dunn). Amy Grant popularized many of her own compositions, including “Baby Baby,” “That’s What Love Is For” and “Tennessee Christmas.” Toby Keith recorded many of his self-penned hits, including “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and “As Good As I Once Was.”

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala is one of the music industry’s premier events of the year. The evening features tributes and performances of the inductees’ songs by special guest artists. In recent years artists such as Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Jimmy Buffett, Ronnie Dunn, Emmylou Harris, Alan Jackson, Little Big Town, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Marty Stuart, Taylor Swift, Josh Turner and Trisha Yearwood have performed at or participated in the event.

The Hall of Fame Gala benefits the nonprofit Nashville Songwriters Foundation. Starting in September, select public seating may be purchased as available by contacting Executive Director Mark Ford at mail@nashvillesongwritersfoundation.com or 615-460-6556.

PRESS RELEASE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (July 31, 2014) - - Athena® bottled water was created for the cause® in 2003 by a breast cancer survivor who had one purpose:  to win the war against breast cancer. Since then, the bottled water brand has donated $2 million to prestigious organizations to support breast cancer awareness, care, education, and research. Purchased by DS Services of America, Inc. (DS Services) in 2010, the Athena brand has enlisted musical superstars Amy Grant and Kellie Pickler to help the cause by naming them Athena® Warriors – Grant in 2012 and Pickler earlier this year.

As Athena® Warriors, Grant and Pickler will both perform at a private, invitation-only “Eat. Drink. Party Pink.” event in Nashville, Tenn. on Sept. 30, 2014 to kick off October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the festivities, Grant will debut a new song, “Welcome Yourself.”  The next day (Oct. 1), that song will be available for sale on iTunes with proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.

“We are excited to gather in Nashville to hear a great night of music from our Athena® Warriors,” said Tom Harrington, President and CEO, DS Services. “What a great way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are honored that Amy is debuting her song at our event that night, and are so appreciative that she is donating proceeds from its sale to the American Cancer Society.”

“Music can be a lifeline for people,” said Grant. “Hearing the right words at the right time can be a powerful and encouraging experience and I hope this song is helpful to many. I am happy to serve as an Athena® Warrior again this year and donate proceeds from this song to the American Cancer Society. We all know someone who has suffered from this terrible disease, and I encourage everyone to do what they can to help raise awareness and funds for research.”

“Breast cancer really hit close to home for me when my "big sis," Summer, was diagnosed at such an early age,” said Pickler. “I’m happy to say she is now cancer-free. But, so many other women continue to have to fight this disease and even more may not know they need to be aware of earlier detection than previously thought. That’s why I’m excited to be an Athena® Warrior...I want to help raise awareness so we can find a cure.”

VIDEO REWIND: CMA Country Christmas 2011

In case you weren't able to catch the show that aired a week ago today, December 1, here are some of the performances you missed from some of country's best artists, new and established. Thank you to Nashville for putting some country in Christmas this year.

Keith Urban: "The Christmas Song" - I am so glad we got a chance to see Keith's softer side. He's always hard rocking and sometimes you can't even truly hear the beauty in his voice because of the band and his own guitar. This was absolutely beautiful.

Vince Gill: "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" - Vince's voice makes anytime the most wonderful time of the year. If you've never seen him live, he is a MUST see for anyone and everyone. He is the definition of what music was meant to sound like.

Kellie Pickler: "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" - Kellie Pickler just brightens up a room the minute she walks in, she doesn't even have to open her mouth to sing. She's a breath of fresh air, brings heat the coldest heart and always is exactly who she is.

Martina McBride: "Please Come Home for Christmas" - Martina just brings class to any event she is a part of. Between her breath-taking beauty, down home heart and voice like a choir of Christmas angels, you can be assured that anything she sings is going to be amazing.

Scotty McCreery: "The First Noel" - Ahh Scotty, you're doing so much for our hometown of Garner, NC. He won American Idol, was voted Best New Artist in the American Country Awards and his debut single, "Love You This Big" was certified gold by the RIAA and earned the title of highest debut for a debut single in the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. I'd say it's gonna be a great Christmas for Scotty McCreery this year.

Little Big Town: "Santa Claus is Back in Town" - Little Big Town can put the "unk" in funk, the "mony" in harmony, and their voices are the gift they choose to give us at Christmas. Thank you Little Big Town for keeping it real and sharing your talent.

Rascal Flatts: "White Christmas" - Rascal Flatts, the newest members of the Grand Ole Opry, provide a harmony that brings that word "mas" to Christmas because people want to hear "mas" (means "more" in Spanish, just in case you weren't familiar). They sell out concert after concert and there's no question as to why once you take a listen to this performance. THIS is the Rascal Flatts style of days gone by that I loved so much, so good to hear it again.

Faith Hill: "The Little Drummer Boy" - Any appearance by Faith Hill guarantees a superb performance and this was no disappointment. I loved the arrangement and the thought that went into making my least favorite Christmas song one I might actually start to like again. Glad to see Faith is back.

Sugarland: "Silent Night" - Not the song I wanted to hear from them, but they did it some major justice. I would have rather have seen an upbeat song that featured more vocals from Kristian and less foreign language I couldn't sing along with. It's nice that she threw in a musical language change for those that could understand though. Jennifer Nettles has one of the most beautiful and strong voices in country music when she ditches the over twang and just lets it truly flow from within. This night was not a silent night by a long shot.

Jennifer Nettles: "All I Want for Christmas is You" - Ok, so shoot me, I didn't like this one. I thought it was too variety-show like and being a huge fan of the original version by Mariah Carey, there are some things that just can't be outdone. That being said, it wasn't awful, but it sure wasn't at the top of my "would watch again over and over on Youtube at all hours of the night" list. But, to those of you who would .... here ya go!

Lauren Alaina: "My Grown Up Christmas List" - Loved it, loved her, loved the song choice. I think this song showcased her ability to show that she's not just a young girl playing dress up and singing into her hairbrush, it shows that she's grown into a beautiful young woman with an amazingly beautiful voice and an innocent quality you rarely see these days. This was one of my favorite performances of the night. I really hope Lauren goes a long way.

Amy Grant: "Breath of Heaven" - Love this song, love Amy Grant. I saw her perform this in Durham, NC in 2010 on her "12 Days of Christmas" tour with Vince Gill and it was stunning. I can say no less of this performance, absolutely wonderful. With the star above her head and the rays of light, she does indeed remind one of the Virgin Mary and makes you actually envision her standing there talking to God about the baby she's carrying. Very well done.

Little Big Town: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" - I think I said it all on their last song shown a few videos above. This is my one of my favorites and they made it even more so.

Brad Paisley and Brian Setzer: "Sleigh Ride" - Hated it, even though I love both artists. I don't like them together and with this being a country show, I thought Brad should at least sing. Now, maybe he was sick and couldn't sing, in that case, at least he was there and played. Just didn't like this arrangement at all.

Darius Rucker: "Winter Wonderland" - How do you not like Darius? I thought he did a great job on this one. I'm glad they included him.

All Artists: "Jingle Bells" Jam - What a great way to end a great evening of music.

Vince Gill and Amy Grant Hit the Road for Their 2011 "Twelve Days of Christmas" Tour

Vince Gill and Amy Grant's Twelve Days Of Christmas tour opens Dec. 7 in Baltimore, ending it's run with a two-night stand (12/20-21) at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.

I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend and review this show last year as a media guest and it was INCREDIBLE. I've seen a few Christmas shows but nothing like this. The stage set is absolutely beautiful with white, decorated twinkling Christmas trees, "snow" drifts, Christmas colored stage lighting, Christmas formal wear and the best music you'll hear anywhere from Vince, Amy, an orchestra like band, and if you're lucky, Vince's daughter, Jenny, a phenomenal performer in her own right. If you're a Vince Gill fan, you probably remember her singing with him on his "Let There Be Peace on Earth" Christmas CD several years ago when she was 11 years old. I don't know for sure if she's touring this year, but if she does, you're in for a wonderful surprise. You can find the schedule here for this year's tour and find out if they're coming to your area. If they are, I have to say GET TICKETS NOW, they will sell out and it's worth the money.

Check out this video from last year's show of Vince and Jenny performing "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and the link to our review and photo gallery. Tis the Season and these tickets make a great stocking stuffer!

CONCERT REVIEW: "TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS" TOUR - VINCE GILL AND AMY GRANT - RALEIGH, NC 12/14/10

Event: "The 12 Days of Christmas" Tour 2010
Artists: Vince Gill and Amy Grant (Featuring Jenny Gill)
Date: 12/14/2010
Venue: Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham, NC

Just let me preface this entire review with one word - speechless. That's what I was for the majority of this outstanding show. There, I think that says it all, don't you? No? Well, ok then, let me give the details of the show to make you jealous that you weren't there.

I was expecting a show of Vince and Amy's "greatest hits" and what I got was anything but. When I walked into the auditorium and saw the stage set up with the Christmas trees, sparkling lights, "snow", and nearly a full orchestra of instruments, I knew this was gonna be something out of the ordinary and something I'd remember for a long time. I was almost like a giddy little girl waiting for the show to start. Finally the lights went down, the stage lit up and I was right, this was definitely going to be an extraordinary performance.

Amy Grant took the stage in an elegant blue gown and she looked absolutely stunning. Vince Gill came out just after Amy and looked as handsome as he ever has. I hadn't seen Vince perform since the mid 90's so this was a long time coming for me and just seeing him made the wait more than worth it. Vince, in his usual charming way, started immediately cracking jokes about how his pants were too big and he didn't want this to turn into "another kind of show" if he didn't get a safety pin! He had to keep pulling his pants up the whole show, it was classic Vince.

Amy started the show with her own unique version of "Jingle Bells", not the typical boring carolers version but the jazzed up version that's on her 2007 "Christmas Collection" cd. She also brought along her own collection of "jingle bells" from home and handed them to 3 people in the front row to help her when she needed that extra jingle throughout the night. Amy and Vince took turns singing most of the night and a few songs they performed together. Amy Grant has one of the most beautiful, flawless voices I've ever heard in a live performance. When she sang her first notes, the Christmas spirit really took over the room. She picked up her guitar and Vince picked up his and they did an absolutely breathtaking duet of one of my favorite Christmas songs, "Tennessee Christmas". Vince performed "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and that was the first time a Christmas song had ever come close to bringing me to tears. What an amazing song by one of the best vocalists of all time. Vince doesn't just sing a song, he tells a story. They performed a few more songs including "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Jingle Bell Rock", "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year", "Grown Up Christmas List" and a few others before taking a break during a quick 15 minute intermission.

The second set started and I couldn't wait to see what surprises were in store to wind up the evening. It started out with Vince and the band playing "Linus and Lucy's Theme from the Peanuts". It was awesome! Vince seemed to own the first part of the second set. He brought the entire sold out audience to total silence (and some tears) with his rendition of "A Cradle in Bethlehem". I was afraid I was gonna start crying and wouldn't be able to stop. Vince really knows how to tug at the heart. He and Amy sang "Baby, It's Cold Outside". When they sing, you can really see the honest love between them, whether it be from the way they watch each other perform, the playful banter between them, the way Vince would walk over and kiss her when the lights would dim, how he took her hand and they would dance while the band played, or how he wrapped her up in the fur blanket she brought onstage with her. I think the most obvious sign of love was the song that Vince wrote about Amy called "The Red Words". It hasn't been released yet, but when it is, if it doesn't hit #1 then there's something wrong with the listening public. The song spoke about her as a woman, a friend, a wife and a mother. It compared her importance in his life to the "red words" highlighted in the Bible, the most important parts. It was so nice to see a couple in love like that. Amy did one of my new favorites, "I Need A Silent Night" and then did an emotional version of "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)" and you could almost envision Mary herself as Amy stood singing on the darkened stage beneath the rays of the spotlight.

The last song I heard before leaving (I had to get home earlier than I wanted to) was my favorite song of the night, a duet between Vince and his daughter, Jenny, who was also one of the background vocalists. When Jenny was 11, she sang "Let There Be Peace on Earth" with Vince on his multi-million selling Christmas cd, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". I was lucky enough to see them sing this favorite song of mine together tonight. It was stunning. Jenny has become an amazing vocalist in her own right and to hear those voices blending was wonderful. I think Jenny got a bigger ovation than Vince did!

If this show should happen to come to your area, all I can say is if you're a fan of either Vince, Amy or just want something to make you remember the reason for the season, don't miss this one. Here is the remainder of the tour dates, get your tickets NOW. Our show sold out rather quickly.
