PAUL THORN'S ECLECTIC "NEVER TOO LATE TO CALL" OUT TODAY

Upcoming tour dates added including Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, and many more

Mississippi’s Paul Thorn has always had one hell of a party trick; his ability to make cohesive, celebrated albums out of every wild idea that hits his mind. And now, Thorn has done it again with Never Too Late To Call. Out today via Thirty Tigers, Never Too Late To Call includes eleven new songs that range from groovy, grateful anthems and a duet with Thorn’s wife about the road bumps of marriage, to moonshine metaphors and James Brown TV appearances. Thorn’s razor wit and personal, humorous touch are on full display on this chill-leaning, wife and daughter-collaborating collection of songs. In a review of Never Too Late To Call, No Depression said, “Even when he brings the family, Thorn still breaks up the joint, gleefully warping minds and amassing converts of all stripes to enlist in his hard-hitting house of worship,” and PopMatters wrote, “On Never Too Late to Call, Paul Thorn charmingly delivers a serious message as a Southern gentleman because he gives a damn.” Fans can stream or purchase Never Too Late To Call now at this link, buy a physical copy or new album-centric merchandise here, and check out a full list of Thorn’s tour dates below.

Never Too Late To Call opens with a song called “Two Tears Of Joy,” a slow-burn ode to life that finds Thorn naming all that he’s thankful for without once coming across as cheesy or overly earnest. “It sounds a little corny to say this but I’m a 56-year-old man who has had a really blessed life,” says Thorn about the inspiration behind the tune. “I’m really grateful and thankful for everything I have and for the people I’ve met. ‘Two Tears of Joy’ is another way of simply saying I’m grateful.” A few tracks later, Thorn and his wife Heather singing a duet called “Breaking Up For Good Again.” “If you’re in any kind of long-time relationship you’ll know there will be bumps in the road and sometimes you won’t get along,” says Thorn. The song is beautifully fingerpicked and sung to perfection by the husband and wife duo who’ve been together for long enough to know the song’s ideas well. “We’ve lived this song and had our moments,” they say. Towards the end of Never Too Late To Call listeners are treated to a pair of groovy numbers in “You Mess Around & Get A Buzz” and “Holy Hottie Toddy.” The former a cautionary tale and the latter a call to love everybody inclusively; both feel comfortable—in classic Thorn fashion—but represent the full spectrum of what this new, thoughtfully mature album has to offer.

Thorn’s music has always been a reflection of where he’s been or where he is in his life. On Never Too Late To Call, we find mellower Paul Thorn. The wit and the—at times—humorous commentary on life’s existential questions are in evidence, but here there is a peace about his life’s journey. Or, to put it in his words, “I’ve been such a lucky boy. I’m crying two tears of joy.”

In addition to releasing Never Too Late To Call, Thorn has announced a slew of new tour dates including stops in Chicago, Atlanta, and a release-day show tonight at Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY. PAUL THORN GROOVES ON NEW ALBUM "NEVER TOO LATE TO CALL" OUT AUGUST 6 - SINGLE "HERE WE GO NOW" AVAILABLE NOW

Listen to “Here We Go” and pre-save "Never Too Late To Call" here

For years now, Mississippi-native songwriter, singer, and guitar slinger Paul Thorn has breathed in everything life has thrown his way and exhaled a song, somehow always relatable to anyone who listens. Through a well-documented, quintessentially southern, both sides of the tracks upbringing—he’s the son of a preacher and nephew of a once-pimp, a former professional boxer with a winning record, an accomplished painter, and even a seasoned skydiver—Thorn has honed a reputation as a writer with razor wit and an intensely personal yet gently humorous catalog of songs. The difference with Thorn’s new album "Never Too Late To Call" is the inspiration behind his new songs. In contrast with earlier work that riffed on short-term love affairs—as well as “kissing the right one good-bye”—the writing on Thorn’s latest release features music from a man who is with the “right one” and is happy to be there. Available on August 6th via Thirty Tigers, "Never Too Late To Call" was recorded at Sam Phillips Studio in Memphis and produced and engineered by Grammy-winning wunderkind Matt Ross-Spang. It includes eleven new songs that range from groovy, grateful anthems and a duet with Thorn’s wife about the road bumps of marriage to moonshine metaphors and James Brown TV appearances.

On June 2, fans were treated to the first taste of music from "Never Too Late To Call", “Here We Go.” Thorn’s late sister Deborah—about whom the album’s title track is written—had a twin sister, Charlotte, who she left behind when she died. “Charlotte is a devout Christian and firmly believes that they’ll be reunited in a better place and will never be apart again,” says Thorn. Like most of his songs, this one also has a broader meaning. “Anyone that has someone they love knows it’s a joy and privilege,” he says. “This song is about having somebody.”

"Never Too Late To Call" opens with a song called “Two Tears Of Joy,” a slow-burn ode to life that finds Thorn naming all that he’s thankful for without once coming across as cheesy or overly earnest.

FOR PAUL THORN, "EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT"

Paul Thorn is one of the best artists that many people may not have heard of. You won't find him soaking up the media spotlight, you won't see him walking the red carpet at the overabundance of music awards shows and you won't see any over the top headlining arena shows because that's not who Paul Thorn is as an artist and it's not what he's about. Keeping his head low, you're more apt to find him in a dark corner of Broadway in Nashville or a Memphis dive, performing to those who swig back shots at the bar with his signature style, keeping his music simple and meaningful, deep and soul wrenching. His blend of guitar slinging, gritty mix of country and bluesy vocals and blatant musical honesty makes Paul a true stand out in today's music world. You won't see or hear another artist like him and that's the way he likes it. He makes his mark as a stand-alone artist, and as someone who is tired of "conveyer belt" artists, that's something I truly appreciate about Paul.

For Paul, his new single says it all, "Everything's Gonna Be Alright."

PAUL THORN’S NEW ALBUM, WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN’ ON?, SHIPS MAY 8. RELEASE TO BE CELEBRATED WITH LIVE WEBCAST ON STAGEIT.COM

0676A.jpeg

TUPELO, Miss. — Paul Thorn will celebrate his new album What the Hell Is Goin’ On? (Perpetual

Obscurity/Thirty Tigers, May 8) with a live webcast on StageIt.com (performance portal at http://bit.ly/IGYBI8) on Tuesday, May 8 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. During the event, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter will discuss and play tracks off his new album from Watson’s Icehouse in Tupelo, Miss. All proceeds from the webcast, which allows fans to donate whatever they feel is a fair amount, will be given by Thorn to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

The album release will also be greeted with artist interviews on both NPR’s “All Things Considered” and on SiriusXM’s “The Bob Edwards Show,” with airdates to be announced. Thorn, who recently concluded his “Soul Salvation” tour with Ruthie Foster, will remain on the road continuously into early fall.

Music industry pundit Bob Lefsetz recently raved about the Elvin Bishop-penned title track: “You've got to check this out . . . It’s about the groove, the feel. And this track is so in the pocket it’s like you've just swallowed a jumping bean, you can’t help but get up from your seat and start flailing your limbs like Gumby. To paraphrase our forebear Ahmet Ertegun, this is the kind of cut that you hear on the radio that makes you jump out of bed and go to the all-night record store in your pajamas to buy. You won’t hear this on Top Forty radio. Paul Thorn is never going to be on American Idol, never mind Elvin Bishop, but this is the essence, this is what this wonderful business was built upon. SOUND!!!”

Paul Thorn took an unexpected detour on the road to recording a follow-up to his most successful release, 2010’s Pimps and Preachers. After writing many discs of semi-autobiographical tunes that have drawn comparisons to John Hiatt and John Prine, Thorn — once hailed as the “Mark Twain of Americana” — decided to record an album of covers. “I wanted to take a break from myself,” he reveals, “do something different and just have fun.”

No slouch as a songwriter himself, Paul chose songs from some of America’s greatest: Buddy Miller, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Elvin Bishop, Lindsey Buckingham, Rick Danko & Bobby Charles, Big Al Anderson, Foy Vance, Donnie Fritts and Eli “Paperboy” Reed among them. Delbert McClinton (singing on Wild Bill & Martha Emerson’s “Bull Mountain Bridge”) and Elvin Bishop (singing and playing guitar on his own “What the Hell Is Goin’ On?”) appear as guest performers on the album as well.

The idea for a covers album grew as Thorn encountered tunes that meant something important to him. “I would hear them in the tour van or I’d be at a festival and see someone perform them live,” Thorn says, and  I'd say, ‘That’s a great song, I wish I had written it!’” One thing all the writers have in common, according to Thorn, is that they are true artists. “They don’t just write songs in an effort to become popular or follow trends,” he explains. “At the risk of sounding corny, they write with their hearts. None of these songs are cookie-cutter tunes like you hear on the radio today. They all have real depth, which is very appealing to me.”

Tune in for a very special Paul Thorn CD Release show! Paul will talk about and play tracks from his new album "What The Hell Is Goin' On?" on release day!
Paul Thorn took an unexpected detour on the road to recording a follow-up to his most successful release, 2010's Pimps and Preachers. After writing many discs of semi-autobiographical tunes that have drawn comparisons to John Hiatt and John Prine, the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter - hailed as the "Mark Twain of Americana" - decided to do an album of covers. "I wanted to take a break from myself
," he reveals, "do something different, and just have fun."

The collection, entitled What The Hell Is Goin' On? (due May 8th on Perpetual Obscurity/Thirty Tigers) finds Thorn putting his own gritty rock stamp on some of his favorite songs. There are some names familiar to Americana fans (Buddy Miller, Ray Wylie Hubbard), some lesser-known (Foy Vance, Wild Bill Emerson) and some surprises. The Buckingham/Nicks tune Don't Let Me Down Again originated on that duo's debut, not during the Fleetwood Mac era, while the Paul Rogers/Free song that Thorn chose to cover is an obscure one, Walk In My Shadow.

The idea for a covers album grew as Thorn encountered tunes that meant something important to him. "I would hear them in the tour van or I'd be at a festival and see someone perform them live," Thorn says, "and I'd say 'That's a great song, I wish I had written it!'" One thing all the writers of these songs have in common, according to Thorn, is that they are true artists. "They don't just write songs in an effort to become popular or follow trends," he explains. "At the risk of sounding corny, they write with their hearts. None of these songs are cookie-cutter tunes like you hear on the radio today. They all have real depth, which is very appealing to me."
